नाशिककर सायकलीस्ट्स किशोर काळे आणि संगमनेरचे विजय काळे यांनी जगातील अवघड स्पर्धांपैकी एक समजली जाणारी तथा डेथ रेस असे टोपण नाव मिळालेली 'भूतान - टूर ऑफ द ड्रॅगन' ही स्पर्धा यशस्वीपणे पूर्ण केली आहे. एकाच वर्षात चार भारतीय सायकलीस्टसने स्पर्धा पूर्ण करण्याची ही पहिलीच वेळ आहे. नाशिककर दोघांसह उत्तराखंड मधील दोघांनीही ही रेस पूर्ण करण्यात यश मिळवले आहे.
1 सप्टेंबर रोजी झालेल्या टूर ऑफ ड्रॅगनच्या नवव्या आवृत्तीत जगभरातून एकूण 35 सायकलीस्ट्सने सहभाग नोंदवला. किशोर काळे यांनी 17 तासात तर विजय काळे यांनी 18 तासात ही स्पर्धा पूर्ण केली. यावेळी स्पर्धा पूर्ण करणाऱ्या दोघा सायकलीस्ट्सचा सत्कार भूतान ऑलिम्पिक कमिटीचे चेअरमन यांच्या हस्ते करण्यात येतो.
सायकलिंगचे कॅपिटल होऊ बघणाऱ्या नाशिक शहरातील चार सायकलीस्ट्सने ही स्पर्धा पूर्ण केली आहे हे विशेष. या आधी 2012 मध्ये डॉ. महेंद्र महाजन तर गेल्यावर्षी 2017 मध्ये डॉ. हितेंद्र महाजन यांनी ही स्पर्धा पूर्ण केली आहे. तर आता 2018 मध्ये किशोर काळे आणि विजय काळे यांनी ही किमया साधली आहे.
याबद्दल किशोर काळे यांनी सांगितले की, पहिल्या प्रयत्नात केवळ 10 मिनिटांसाठी स्पर्धा सोडण्याची नामुष्की पत्करावी लागल्यानंतर मी जोमाने सराव करत यावेळी पुन्हा स्पर्धा पूर्ण करण्याचे ध्येय ठेवूनच सहभागी झालो होतो. हिमालयाचे विहंगम दृश्यांची अनुभूती अनुभवण्याची संधी स्पर्धेत सहभागी झाल्यानंतर मिळते.एकूण चार घाट चढून उतरायचे असतात. त्यातील शेवटचा घाट सलग 40 किमीच्या चढायचा असल्याचे शेवटपर्यंत स्पर्धेतील आव्हान जिवंत असते. त्यामुळे सहकाऱ्यांचा तगडा पाठिंबा असल्याशिवाय हे शक्य नव्हते. संपूर्ण नाशिक सायकलीस्ट्स परिवार, संस्थेचे मार्गदर्शक हरीशजी बैजल सर, अध्यक्ष प्रविणकुमार खाबिया, आत्ताच आयर्नमॅन ठरलेले शहराचे पोलीस आयुक्त डॉ. रवींद्रकुमार सिंगल, डॉ. महाजन बंधू, मोहिंदर सिंग यांचे चांगले सहकार्य आणि शुभेच्छा मिळाल्या. या निमित्ताने माझा मित्र जसपाल सिंग विर्दी यांचे स्वप्न पूर्ण झाल्याच भावना असल्याचे किशोर काळे म्हणाले.
काय असते 'टूर ऑफ द ड्रॅगन?'
जगभरात होणाऱ्या विविध सायकलिंग स्पर्धांपैकी 'डेथ रेस' असे टोपण नाव मिळालेली ही स्पर्धा. एका दिवसात २६८ किमी अंतर, समुद्र सपाटीपासून १२०० मीटर ते ३३४० मीटर अशी उंची, हिमालयीन पर्वतरांगांतून ४० किमीपेक्षा जास्त लांबीचे तीन घाट ओलांडत पूर्ण करावी लागणारी जगातील सर्वात कठीण एकदिवसीय सोलो सायकल स्पर्धा असलेली टूर ऑफ ड्रॅगन आजवर खूप कमी सायकलीस्टना पूर्ण करता आली आहे.
प्रचंड थंडीत मध्य भूतानमधील भुमतांग येथून १ सप्टेंबर रोजी पहाटे २ वाजता सुरु होणाऱ्या या स्पर्धेसाठी सायंकाळी ६ वाजताचा कटऑफ असतो. म्हणजेच एकूण १६ तासात २६८ किमी अंतर या अवघड पर्वतीय रांगांमधून घाट रस्त्यांवरून पूर्ण करावयाची असते. एका मोजणीनुसार प्रत्येक सायकलीस्टला एका दिवसाच्या या रेस दरम्यान सरळ रेषेत ३७९० मीटर (१२४३४ फुट) चढून ३९५० (१२९५९ फुट) उतरून येण्याची जणू शिक्षाच मिळते. भूतानची राजधानी थिम्फू शहरात ही स्पर्धा संपते.

भूतान ऑलिम्पिक कमिटी यांच्याद्वारे ही 'टूर ऑफ ड्रॅगन' सायकल स्पर्धा आयोजित करण्यात येते. प्रथम क्रमांकास १ लाख ५० हजाराचे पारितोषिक देण्यात येते.
ही स्पर्धा पूर्ण करणारे पहिले भारतीय ठरलेले डॉ. महेंद्र महाजन सांगतात की, भूतानचे राजकुमार दाशो वांगचुक यांनी पहिल्यांदा हा प्रवास पूर्ण केला आणि त्यानंतर सलग ९ वर्षे ही स्पर्धा सुरु आहे. भूतानचे पंतप्रधान शेरिंग टोबगे यांनी देखील ही स्पर्धा अनेकवेळा पूर्ण केली आहे. या सर्व परिस्थितीमुळे तेथील स्थानिक लोकांचा या स्पर्धेप्रती असलेला जिव्हाळा वेगळेच काही सांगून जातो. पहाटे दोन वाजता सुरू होणाऱ्या या स्पर्धेच्या फ्लॅगऑफ वेळी अनेक स्थानिक नागरिक उपस्थित असतात असे डॉ. महाजन सांगतात.विजय काळे आपला अनुभव कथन करताना म्हणाले की, स्पर्धेच्या मार्गात येणाऱ्या अनेक वाड्या, गावे, शहरातून नागरिकांचा सकारात्मक दृष्टिकोन दिसून येतो. जगभरातून आलेल्या सायकलीस्ट्सना तेथे आदर मिळतो. विशेष करून भारतीयांना तिथे प्रचंड मान दिला जातो. त्यामुळे भारतातून या स्पर्धांना सहभाग वाढवा यासाठी प्रयत्न करणार असल्याचे काळे यांनी सांगितले.
