वयाच्या चाळीशीत असताना लोक कसे चालतात त्यावरून त्यांचा मेंदू आणि शरीर किती म्हातारं झालं आहे, हे कळू शकतं. शास्त्रज्ञ यासंबंधी संशोधन करत आहेत.

चालण्याच्या गतीची एक साधी चाचणी घेऊन शास्त्रज्ञ म्हातारे होत जाण्याची प्रक्रिया जाणून घेऊ शकतात.

संथपणे चालणाऱ्या लोकांचं शरीर लवकर म्हातारं होतंच, त्यासोबत त्यांचा चेहरा वयस्कर दिसू लागतो आणि त्यांच्या मेंदूचा आकारही लहान असल्याचं संशोधनातून निष्पन्न झालं आहे.

हे एक आश्चर्यकारक संशोधन असल्याचं शास्त्रज्ञांनी म्हटलं आहे.

साधारणपणे वयाच्या पासष्टीनंतर सर्वांगीण आरोग्य तपासण्यासाठी डॉक्टर चालण्याची गती तपासत असतात. कारण चालण्यातून स्नायूंची बळकटी, फुफ्फुसाची कार्यक्षमता, संतुलन, मणक्याची मजबूती तसंच दृष्टी या सर्वांबद्दलच योग्य अंदाज येतो.

वृद्धत्वाकडे झुकलेले असताना संथपणे चालणाऱ्या व्यक्तींना स्मृतिभ्रंश होण्याची शक्यताही जास्त असते.

समस्येचे संकेतदर्शक

न्यूझीलंडमध्ये याबाबत एक अभ्यास करण्यात आला. यामध्ये 70 च्या दशकात जन्मलेल्या म्हणजेच आता साधारणपणे 45 वर्षे वय असलेल्या व्यक्तींच्या चालण्याची तपासणी करण्यात आली.

अभ्यासात सहभागी झालेल्या व्यक्तींची शारीरिक क्षमता तसंच मेंदूची कार्यक्षमताही बारकाईने तपासण्यात आली होती. लहानपणापासून या व्यक्तींची दोन वर्षांतून एकदा आकलन आणि बुद्ध्यांक चाचणीही करण्यात आली होती.

संथ चाल हे म्हातारपणी येऊ शकणाऱ्या समस्यांचे संकेत जवळपास दहा वर्षे आधीच देत असल्याचं अभ्यासातून दिसून आलं, अशी माहिती प्रा. टेरी ई. मॉफिट यांनी दिली. मॉफिट हे लंडनच्या किग्ज कॉलेज ऑफ लंडन तसंच अमेरिकेतल्या ड्यूक युनिव्हर्सिटीतील प्रमुख लेखक आहेत.

45 वर्षे वयात चालण्याच्या वेगात बराच फरक पाहायला मिळतो. न धावता जास्तीत जास्त 4 मीटर/सेकंद इतक्या वेगाने चालता येऊ शकतं.

संथपणे चालणाऱ्या व्यक्तींमध्ये वय वेगानं वाढण्यासोबतच फुफ्फुस, दातांच्या समस्या आणि क्षीण रोगप्रतिकारक शक्ती ही लक्षणं वेगानं चालणाऱ्या व्यक्तींच्या तुलनेत अधिक दिसून आली.

सर्वात अनपेक्षित गोष्ट म्हणजे, मेंदूचं बारकाईने निरीक्षण केलं असता संथ चाल असलेल्या व्यक्तींचा मेंदू जास्त वयाचा दिसत असल्याचं संशोधनात आढळलं.

मुलं तीन वर्षांची असल्यापासूनच बुद्धिमत्ता, भाषा आणि मुलांच्या हालचाली तसंच वाढीची क्षमता यांची चाचणी घेतल्यास वयाच्या 45 व्या वर्षी त्याचं चाल कशी असेल याचा अंदाज लावता येऊ शकतो, असं संशोधनात सिद्ध झालं आहे.

संथ चालीसह मोठे होणाऱ्या मुलांचा (1.2 मीटर/सेकंद) बुद्ध्यांक वेगवान चाल असणाऱ्या मुलांच्या (1.7 मीटर/सेकंद) बुद्ध्यांकापेक्षा 12 गुणांनी कमी असल्याचं 40 वर्षांनंतर आढळून येतं.

जीवनशैलीशी संबंध

संशोधकांच्या आंतरराष्ट्रीय समूहाने जामा नेटवर्क ओपनमध्ये याविषयी लिहिलं आहे. आरोग्य आणि बुद्ध्यांक यामधला फरक आपल्या जीवनशैलीशी संबंधित असू शकतो किंवा अगदी सुरूवातीला असलेलं उत्तम आरोग्य या बाबींशी संबंधित असू शकतं, असा यामध्ये उल्लेख आहे.

आपल्याला उत्तम आरोग्य लाभणार की नाही याचे संकेत हे खूप आधीपासूनच मिळत असल्याचं संशोधक स्पष्ट करतात.

तरूण वयातील चालण्याचा वेग मोजणं हा आपलं म्हातारपण तपासण्यासाठीचा एक मार्ग असू शकतो, असं संशोधकांनी सांगितलं आहे.

हलकं जेवण घेण्यापासून ते मेटमॉर्फिन औषधापर्यंत विविध उपचारांचा शोध सध्या घेतला जात आहे.

आपल्या आरोग्याबाबत मेंदू आणि शरीराचे काही संकेत असतात. तरूण आणि निरोगी राहण्यासाठी आपल्या जीवनशैलीत बदल केल्यास उत्तम आयुष्य जगता येऊ शकतं, असं शास्त्रज्ञांनी स्पष्ट केलं आहे.
