सिद्धयोगी गजानन महाराज : आजच्या दिवशी समाधी घेतली
शेगावमधली ती भर उन्हाळ्यातील दुपार होती. रणरणतं ऊन आसमंतात व्यापलं होतं. तेवढ्यात एका वडाच्या झाडाखाली एक विचित्रसा वाटणारा पण तेजःपुंज तरुण फेकून दिलेल्या पत्रावळीवरील अन्नाची शीत वेचून खात होता. त्याच्या तोंडातून 'गण गण गणात बोते' असा नामघोष चालला होता. त्या नामघोषात त्या तरुणाला रणरणत्या उन्हाचंही काही वाटत नव्हतं. गजानन महाराजांच पहिलं दर्शन असं झालं. बंकटलाल आणि दामोदर या दोघा तरुणांनी महाराजांना प्रथम पाहिलं आणि त्यांच्या त्या विचित्र वागण्यापेक्षाही त्यांच्या चेहर्यावरच्या तेजस्वी भावानेच हे त्यांच्याकडे आकर्षित झाले.
हे कोणी दिव्य पुरूष आहेत, याची त्यांना खात्री पटली. म्हणून ते त्यांना गावात घेऊन आले. लोकही त्यांना पाहायला गर्दी करू लागले. त्यांना पंचपक्वान्न, कपडे, दागिने असे काही वाहायला लागले. महाराज निरिच्छपणे ते सगळं फेकून देत असत. त्यांच्या वागण्याचा अदमास कुणालाही येत नसे. ते कुठेही झोप. काहीही खात आणि कपडे घातले तर घातले नाही तर दिगंबरावस्थेतही ते असत.

त्यांची कीर्ती सगळीकडे पसरू लागल्यानंतर मोठमोठी मंडळी त्यांना भेटायला येऊ लागली. दस्तूरखुद्द लोकमान्य टिळकांनीही त्यांची भेट घेतली होती. अकोल्यात शिवजयंतीसंदर्भात झालेल्या एका सभेला, टिळकांबरोबर गजानन महाराजही व्यासपीठावर बसले होते. लोकमान्य आणि अमरावतीचे दादासाहेब खापर्ड्यांसमवेत ते अकोल्यातील प्रभू रामचंद्राच्या मंदिरात दर्शनालाही गेले होते. श्री वासुदेवानंद सरस्वतीही महाराजांना भेटायला शेगावला आले होते. शैक्षणिक आणि सामाजिक क्षेत्रातील अनेक मंडळी महाराजांना भेटायला येऊ लागली.
सिद्ध योगी असल्याने अनेक चमत्कारही ते करत. अत्यंत कनवाळू असल्याने कुणाचं दुःख त्यांना पाहवत नसे. खरे तर त्यांच्याकडे येणारी गांजलेली मंडळी त्यांना पाहताच आपलं दुःख विसरून जात असत. महाराज त्यांना त्यांच्या दुःखावर उपाय सांगत असत. लोकांच्या दुःखा ची नस त्यांना चांगलीच कळलेली असे. त्यामुळे त्यांच्या सल्ल्याने त्या व्यक्तीचं भलं झाल्याशिवाय राहत नसे. त्यामुळे लोक भक्तिभावाने त्यांच्याकडे येत.
महाराजांची कीर्ती पुढे वाढतच गेली. विदर्भात तर घरांघरांत ते माहीत होते. पण उर्वरित महाराष्ट्रात आणि शेजारच्या राज्यातही त्यांची कीर्ती वाढत गेली. विदर्भात तर महाराजांना नैवेद्य दाखविल्याशिवाय न जेवणारी मंडळी आजही आहेत. अनेकांनी त्यांना आपले गुरू मानले व त्यांची पूजा सुरू केली. महाराष्ट्रभर त्यांची मंदिरं स्थापली गेली.
महाराजांची कीर्ती वाढत गेल्यानंतर त्यांनी स्वतःच आपल्या शिष्यांना ट्रस्ट स्थापन करायला सांगितला. त्यानंतर मग गजानन महाराज संस्थान या नावाने १९०८ मध्ये ट्रस्ट स्थापन झाला. या ट्रस्टच्या माध्यमातून अनेक सामाजिक कामे केली जाऊ लागली. हे कार्य आजही चालू आहे. हिंदूच्या अनेक धर्मस्थळी या ट्रस्टच्या उत्तम सुविधा असलेल्या धर्मशाळा आहेत.
