सौदर्यांचे मापदंड रूढ आहेत आपल्याकडे. अनेकींनी प्रयत्न केले तरी या मापदंडांचं गारूड काही आपल्या मनातून जात नाही. हेच कारण आहे की अनेक स्त्रिया आपल्या शरीरात बदल करून घेण्यासाठी प्लॅस्टिक सर्जरी करत असतात.
आपला बांधा सुडौल करण्यासाठी, स्तन भरीव दिसावे म्हणून ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटची शस्त्रक्रिया अनेक महिला करतात. पण या शस्त्रक्रियांचे अनेक धोके आहेत.
या धोक्यांची महिलांना ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांट शस्त्रक्रियेच्या आधीच पूर्णपणं कल्पना देण्यात यावी असं ब्रिटिश असोसिएशन ऑफ प्लॅस्टक सर्जन्स (BAAPS) या संस्थेने म्हटलं आहे.
अशी सर्जरी केलेल्या हजारो महिलांनी दावा केला आहे की ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटनंतर त्रास झालेला आहे. पण अशा सर्जरीचे काही साईड इफेक्ट असू शकतात याचा शास्त्रीय डेटा उपलब्ध नाही.
त्यामुळे डॉक्टरांनी आता यावर अधिक संशोधन व्हायला हवं, अशी मागणी केली आहे.
ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटमुळे आजारी पडणं याला शास्त्रीय आधार नसला तरी अनेक महिलांना म्हटलंय की त्यांनी हे इंप्लांट काढून टाकल्यावर त्यांना बरं वाटायला लागलं.
धोके असले तरीही या शस्त्रक्रियेचं प्रमाण काही कमी होताना दिसत नाही. एकट्या यूकेमध्ये दहा लाखांपेक्षा जास्त ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांट शस्त्रक्रिया होतात. आणि डॉक्टरांचं म्हणणं आहे की त्यांच्या पेशंटस् याबदद्ल खुश आहेत.
तरीही अनेक जणींनी बीबीसीच्या व्हिक्टोरिया डर्बीशायर या कार्यक्रमात बोलताना सांगितलं की त्यांना ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांट शस्त्रक्रियेनंतर अनेक आरोग्यविषयक समस्यांना तोंड द्यावं लागलं.
इंप्लांट काढून टाकले आणि बरं वाटलं
फिटनेस ट्रेनर नओमी मॅकआर्थर 28 वर्षांची आहे. तिने 2014 मध्ये ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांट शस्त्रक्रिया केली, पण काही महिन्यातच तिला प्रचंड वेदना व्हायला लागल्या.
"मला आठवतं, माझ्या पोटात प्रचंड दुखायचं. मी कायम थकलेले असायचे, जसं काही मी एखादी मॅरेथॉन धावले आहे किंवा शेकडो खड्डे खणले आहेत. तसं पाहिलं तर मी काहीच काम केलेलं नसायचं. पेन हातात धरून नुसतं लिहिणं पण प्रचंड थकवणारं असायचं."
जसा जसा काळ लोटला तसं तसं तिला अजून आरोग्यविषयक समस्यांचा सामना करावा लागला. तिचे केस गळायला लागले, तिच्या अंगावर चट्टे उठले, आणि तिला अॅलर्जीचाही त्रास झाला.
"ते सगळं भयानक होतं," नुसत्या आठवणीने तिला रडू आवरत नाही.
नओमीच्या डॉक्टरांनी तिला सांगितलं की तिच्या त्रासाचा आणि ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटसचा काही संबंध नाही. त्यांनी असंही सांगितलं की लुपस नावाच्या आजाराने त्रस्त आहे, या आजारात माणसाची रोगप्रतिकारक शक्ती त्याच्याच पेशींवर हल्ला चढवते.
पण मागच्या वर्षी नओमीला ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटसमुळे होऊ शकणाऱ्या आजाराविषयी कळालं. या आजारांनी त्रस्त असणाऱ्या अनेक महिलांचे ग्रुप्स ऑनलाईन आहेत हेही तिला कळालं.
मग तिने ठरवलं की आपले इंप्लांटस काढून टाकावेत. ती म्हणते की इंप्लांटस काढून टाकल्याच्या काही दिवसातच तिला चार वर्षांपासून होणारा त्रास कमी व्हायला लागला.
"मला एकदम बरं वाटायला लागलं. आता मी एकदम व्यवस्थित आहे. माझा मलाचा विश्वास बसत नाही की मला इतकं बरं वाटू शकतं."

ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटमुळे होणाऱ्या आजाराविषयी अनेक डॉक्टरांच्या मनात साशंकता आहे. या शस्त्रक्रियेने काही आजार होऊ शकतात यावर डॉक्टरांचा विश्वास नाही. आम्ही एका डॉक्टरांशी बोललो ज्यांनी आपलं नाव न सांगायच्या अटीवर आम्हाला सांगितलं की असा काही आजार आहे यावर त्यांचा अजिबात विश्वास नाही.
"ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांट आजाराची ज्यांनी तक्रार केली आहे त्यांची लक्षण ठराविक नसून अनेक आहेत. ती कशाचीही असून शकतात.
ही लक्षणं म्हणजे थकवा, छातीत दुखणं, केस गळणं, डोकेदुखी, हुडहुडी भरणं, उन्हाने त्रास होणं, प्रचंड वेदना होणं, गरगरणं, अंधारी येणं आणि झोप न लागणं.
पण हे सगळे त्रास ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटमुळे होतात असं सिद्ध करणारं संशोधन अद्याप तरी उपलब्ध नाही.
इंटरनॅशनल सोसायटी ऑफ प्लॅस्टिक सर्जरी या संस्थेचे यूकेमधले पदाधिकारी नवीन कव्हाले म्हणाले, "माझ्या पेशंट सांगतात त्यांना ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटमुळे त्रास होतो. मी त्यांच्यावर संशय घेत नाहीये पण याला काहीच शास्त्रीय आधार नाही. शास्त्रीय आधार नसला तरी हा त्रास त्यांच्यासाठी एक वास्तवच आहे हे मी मान्य करतो."
"ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटनंतर होणाऱ्या आजारांबद्दल आम्ही आधी चर्चा करत नव्हतो. पण आता आम्ही पेशंटला सल्ला देतो की संपूर्ण विचाराअंतीच निर्णय घ्यावा," ते पुढे सांगतात.
BAAPS च्या सल्लागार प्लॅस्टिक सर्जन नोरा न्युजंट याही हेच मत मांडतात, "डॉक्टरांनी पेशंटला ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांट केल्यानंतर होऊ शकणाऱ्या संभाव्य आजारांची कल्पना द्यावी. आणि हेही सांगावं, की असे ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटमुळे होतात की त्याला आणखी काही कारण आहे हे अजून स्पष्ट झालेलं नाही, पण तरीही याची कल्पना तुम्हाला असावी म्हणून आम्ही सांगतोय."
जेव्हा अनेकींना याचा त्रास झाला होता
2010 साली यूकेतल्या हजारो महिलांना पीआयपी प्रकारच्या ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटमुळे त्रास झाला होता. हे इंप्लांट फुटण्याची शक्यता इतर इंप्लांटच्या तुलनेत दुप्पट होती. आणि गाद्यांमध्ये वापरतात ते सिलीकॉन यात वापरलं गेलं होतं.
स्टेफ हॅरिस यांनी तीनदा वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारचे इंप्लांट केली होते. आणि दर इंप्लांटच्या वेळेस त्यांना त्रास झाला.
त्यांना आधी ब्रेस्ट कॅन्सर होता. त्यांना सतत थकवा जाणवायचा आणि वेदना व्हायच्या. ब्रेस्ट इंप्लाटनंतर तिचे प्लॅस्टिक सर्जन आणि कॅन्सर स्पेशालिस्ट डॉक्टर दोघांनाही वाटलं याचं मूळ इंप्लांटमध्ये आहे.
सततच्या त्रासामुळे स्टेफ यांना नर्सची नोकरी सोडावी लागली.
"कधी कधी वाटतं, ब्रेस्ट कॅन्सरचा सामना करणं सोपं होतं. हा जो प्रचंड थकवा जाणवतो मला, त्यापेक्षा केमोथेरेपी सोपी होती. मला माहितेय हे ऐकायला विचित्र वाटेल, पण कदाचित मी इतरांपेक्षा वेगळी असेन. ब्रेस्ट इंप्लांटनंतर होणारा त्रास जास्त कठीण आहे."
स्टेफ आता त्यांचे इंप्लांट काढून टाकणार आहे. त्या म्हणतात, "मला फार काही नाही, पण लहान लहान गोष्टी करण्याची स्वप्न पडतात. जसं की मस्त हवेत एक छोटासा फेरफटका मारणं."
