1892 सालच्या एप्रिल महिन्यात दक्षिण भारतातल्या हैदराबाद संस्थानामध्ये इंग्रजीमध्ये लिहिलेलं एक छोटसं आठ पानी पत्रक फिरवण्यात आलं. हैदराबाद म्हणजे ब्रिटिशकालीन भारतातलं एक मोठं आणि श्रीमंत संस्थान.
या पत्रकामुळे पत्रकात उल्लेख केलेल्या जोडप्याचं आयुष्यच उद्ध्वस्त होणार होतं. हे जोडपं होतं मेहदी हसन आणि त्यांची पत्नी एलेन गर्टरुड डोनली. मेहदी हसन यांना फार मान होता. समाजात त्यांचं नाव सन्मानाने घेतलं जाई. तर एलेन भारतात जन्मलेल्या ब्रिटिश नागरिक होत्या.
एकोणविसाव्या शतकात आंतरधर्मीय विवाहाला परवानगी नव्हती. शिवाय, ज्यांच्या हातात सत्ता आहे त्यांना ज्यांच्यावर त्यांची सत्ता आहे त्यांच्याशी लग्न किंवा शरीरसंबंध ठेवण्याचीही परवानगी नव्हती. एखाद्या भारतीय पुरुषाने ब्रिटिश स्त्रिशी प्रेमसंबंध ठेवणंही सामान्य बाब नव्हती.
मात्र, या जोडप्यातले दोघंही निझामाच्या अधिपत्याखाली असलेल्या हैदराबादमधल्या प्रतिष्ठित वर्तुळातले होते. एलेनची ब्रिटिश ओळख आणि निजाम सरकारमध्ये मेहदी हसन यांची महत्त्वाची भूमिका यामुळे दोघांनाही 'पावर कपल' म्हणून ओळखलं जायचं. त्या दोघांनाही महाराणी व्हिक्टोरिया यांची भेट घेण्यासाठी लंडनने आमंत्रणही दिलं होतं.
मेहदी यांना निजाम सरकारमध्ये एकावर एक बढत्या मिळत गेल्या मात्र, यामुळे सामान्य लोकांमध्ये विशेषतः हैदराबादमध्ये राहत असलेल्या उत्तर भारतीयांमध्ये ईर्ष्या निर्माण झाली.
मेहदी हैदराबाद उच्च न्यायालयाचे सरन्यायाधीश झाले. पुढे त्यांना गृहमंत्रीपदही मिळालं. या सर्वांमुळे त्यांच्याकडे अमाप पैसा चालून आला आणि या अमाप पैशासोबतच सहकाऱ्यांचा द्वेषही ओढावला. सामाजिक पत वाढली तसं एलेन यांनीही परद्यातून बाहेर पडून हैदराबादमधल्या श्रीमंत सामाजिक वर्तुळात वावरायला सुरुवात केली. यामुळे काही जण भलतेच नाराज झाले. पण, मेहदी आणि एलेन दोघंही आपल्या चैनीच्या आयुष्यात मग्न होते.
मात्र, एका छोट्या पत्रकात या जोडप्याच्या इतिहासाबद्दल भलतच छापून आलं आणि दोघांच्या आयुष्याला कलाटणी मिळाली.
पत्रक लिहिणाऱ्या लेखकाला/लेखकांना मेहदीच्या यशाचा हेवा वाटत होता आणि मेहदी यांच्या कामात काहीच खोट मिळाली नसल्याने त्यांनी एलेनला लक्ष्य केलं.
या पत्रकात तीन गंभीर आरोप करण्यात आले होते.
पहिला आरोप करण्यात आला होता तो म्हणजे मेहदीशी लग्न करण्याआधी एलेन या शरीरविक्रेय करायच्या.
दुसरा आरोप होता की मेहदी आणि एलेन दोघांनी लग्न केलेलंच नाही.
आणि तिसरा गंभीर आरोप होता की सरकारमध्ये मोठमोठी पदं मिळवण्यासाठी मेहदीने एलेनचा वापर केला.
या पत्रकामुळे चिडलेल्या मेहदी यांनी पत्रक छापणारे प्रिंटर एस. एम. मित्रा यांच्याविरोधात रेसिडेन्सी कोर्टात खटला दाखल केला. त्यांच्या मित्रांनी त्यांना असं न करण्याचा सल्ला दिला होता. मात्र, मेहदी यांनी याकडे दुर्लक्ष केलं. या खटल्याची सुनावणी ब्रिटीश न्यायमूर्तींसमोर होणार होती.

दोन्ही पक्षकारांनी आपापली बाजू भक्कमपणे मांडण्यासाठी प्रसिद्ध ब्रिटिश वकील नेमले. हा खटला खूपच गाजला. दोन्ही पक्षकारांनी साक्षीदारांना लाच दिली आणि साक्षीदारांनी खोटी साक्ष दिल्याचे आरोप दोघांनीही एकमेकांवर केले.
अखेर खटल्याचा निकाल आला आणि न्यायमूर्तींनी मित्रा यांना पत्रक छापल्याच्या गुन्ह्यातून निर्दोष मुक्त केलं. या निकालाने सर्वांनाच आश्चर्याचा धक्का बसला. खटल्या दरम्यान आणि आधी एस. एम. मित्रांनी मेहदी यांच्यावर व्याभिचार, फसवणूक, खोटारडेपणाचे आरोप केले होते त्याबद्दल न्यायमूर्तींनी त्यांना काहीच शिक्षा सुनावली नाही.
हा 'पत्रक घोटाळा' आंतरराष्ट्रीय पातळीवर गाजला. निजाम सरकार, भारतातलं ब्रिटिश सरकार, लंडनमधलं ब्रिटिश सरकार आणि जगभरातली वृत्तपत्रं नऊ महिने चाललेल्या या खटल्यावर बारीक लक्ष ठेवून होते.
खटल्याचा निकाल आल्यानंतर काही दिवसातच मेहदी आणि एलेन दोघांनीही लखनौला जाण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. दोघंही लखनौलाच लहानाचे मोठे झाले होते.
मेहदी पूर्वी लखनौमध्ये कलेक्टर होते. त्यामुळे लखनौला गेल्यावर आपल्याला पेन्शन किंवा इतर काही भत्ता मिळावा, यासाठी त्यांनी खूप प्रयत्न केले. मात्र, त्याचा उपयोग झाला नाही.
मेहदी यांनी एकदा महाराणी व्हिक्टोरिया यांच्याप्रती आपला आदर व्यक्त करण्यासाठी साश्रू नयनांनी पत्र लिहिलं होतं आणि या पत्रात त्यांनी अलीकडेच स्थापन झालेल्या इंडियन नॅशनल काँग्रेस पक्षाला 'धोकादायक' म्हटलं होतं. मात्र, ब्रिटिश सरकारप्रती इतकी इमानदारी दाखवणाऱ्या मेहदी यांना निझाम सरकाराप्रमाणेच भारतातल्या ब्रिटिश सरकारनेही एकटं पाडलं.
निझाम राजवटीतले गृहमंत्री हे पदही त्यांच्याकडून काढून घेण्यात आलं. इतकंच नाही तर त्यांना पेन्शन किंवा नुकसान भरपाई म्हणून दमडीही दिली नाही. इतकी अपमानास्पद वागणूक त्यांना मिळाली.
वयाच्या अवघ्या 52 व्या वर्षी त्यांचं निधन झालं. ते गेले त्यावेळी त्यांची परिस्थिती हलाखीची होती. एलेनसाठी कुठलीही आर्थिक तरतूद त्यांनी केलेली नव्हती.
हळूहळू एलेनची परिस्थितीही अतिशय बिकट झाली. आयुष्याच्या शेवटच्या वर्षात तिने एका कागदावर आपली कैफियत मांडली आणि हैदराबादचे पंतप्रधान आणि निजाम यांना आर्थिक भत्ता मिळावा, यासाठी विनवणी केली.

हैदराबादच्या अधिकारी वर्गाने एलेन यांच्या पत्राचा सहानुभूतीपूर्वक विचार केला आणि त्यांच्यासाठी एक छोटा भत्ता लागू केला. मात्र, भत्ता सुरू झाल्यानंतर काही महिन्यातच एलेन यांना प्लेगची लागण झाली आणि त्यांचंही निधन झालं.
मेहदी आणि एलेन या जोडप्याच्या कहाणीतून भारतातल्या ब्रिटिश राजवटीच्या सुवर्णकाळात इथे असलेल्या सांस्कृतिक संकराची एक झलक बघायला मिळते. मात्र, लवकरच भारतीय राष्ट्रवादींनी तत्कालीन सामाजिक-राजकीय रचनेला आव्हान द्यायला सुरुवात केली.
वैयक्तिक आयुष्यात उठलेल्या वादळातही या दोघांनी एकमेकांची साथ सोडली नाही. मात्र, या दोघांनी त्या काळच्या रुढीबद्ध शहाणपणाला आव्हान दिल्याने अखेर त्यांचा करूण अंत झाला.
हैदराबाद आणि इतर संस्थानांच्या रूपात राजेशाही जिवंत असली तरी हा 'पत्रक घोटाळा' वसाहतवादी भारताच्या इतिहासातला कदाचित शेवटचा अध्याय होता. यानंतर स्वतंत्र भारताची मागणी जोर धरू लागली होती.
1885 साली इंडियन नॅशनल काँग्रेस पक्षाची स्थापना झाली होती. मात्र, मेहदी आणि एलेन प्रकरणाची जोरदार चर्चा सुरू झाली त्यावेळी म्हणजे 1892 च्या दरम्यान पक्षाच्या कार्यालाही वेग येऊ लागला होता.
एलेन यांच्या मृत्यूनंतर महात्मा गांधी दक्षिण आफ्रिकेतून भारतात परतले आणि स्वतंत्र भारताच्या चळवळीत त्यांनी काँग्रेसची भूमिका अधिक भक्कम केली. भारतात बदलाचे वारे वाहू लागले होते आणि वर्तमानपत्राच्या मथळ्यात राजे, त्यांची संस्थानं, त्यांचे घोटाळे यांची जागा आता राष्ट्रप्रेरणा घेऊ लागली होती.
या बदलात हा 'पत्रक घोटाळा'ही हरवून गेला.
