आलोक वैद्य-मेनन कवी आणि कलाकार आहे. ते ट्रान्सजेंडरच्या बाह्य रूपाविषयी सोशल मीडियावर अतिशय रंगीत आणि सक्षमपणे मोहीम राबवतात. मात्र, त्यांच्या दिसण्यावरून बरेचदा त्यांना ट्रोल केलं जातं.
मी माझ्या पालकांना जेव्हा सांगितलं की मी ट्रान्सजेंडर व्हायचं आहे तेव्हा त्यांची पहिली प्रतिक्रिया होती, "पण, तुला किती केस आहेत! स्त्री होण्यासाठी तुला हे सगळे केस काढावे लागतील आणि ते खूप त्रासदायक आहे. तेव्हा तू हा नाद सोडून दे." माझ्या स्त्री होण्याच्या मार्गात माझ्या शरीरावरचे केस अडसर असल्याचं त्यांना वाटत होतं.
लोकांना अजूनही लैंगिकतेविषयी फारशी माहिती नाही. ते स्त्री किंवा पुरूष या दोनच स्वरूपात लोकांना बघतात. ट्रान्सजेंडर म्हणजे फक्त स्त्री किंवा पुरूष असणं नव्हे. एखादी व्यक्ती ट्रान्सजेंडर आहे म्हणजे तिला स्त्री किंवा पुरूष व्हायचं आहे, असाच लोकांचा समज असतो. मात्र, लैंगिक ओळखीच्या इतरही काही शक्यता असू शकतात, याबद्दल ते विचारच करत नाही.
मला जेव्हा माझ्या लैंगिकतेविषयी कळू लागलं तेव्हा मी ट्रान्स सपोर्ट ग्रुपमध्ये जाऊ लागलो. तिथे स्वतःचे अनुभव मांडणं, इतरांना कोणत्या सर्वनामाने हाक मारावी आणि इतर अनेक बाबतीत मोकळेपणाने बोलता येत होतं. मी तिथे पुरूषांसारखे कपडे घालून जायचो तेव्हा तिथले लोक गोंधळून जायचे. ते मी पुरूष आहे, असं समजून माझ्याशी बोलायचे आणि जेव्हा मी स्त्रियांसारखे कपडे घालून जायचो तेव्हा मला स्त्री समजून माझ्याशी बोलायचे.
त्या ग्रुपमधले काही जण म्हणायचे, "तू ट्रान्सजेंडर आहेस, हे इतरांनी गांभीर्याने घ्यावं, असं तुला वाटत असेल तर तू तुझ्या शरीरावरचे अनावश्यक केस काढ आणि स्त्री होण्यासाठीचे वैद्यकीय उपचार घे."
अशा प्रतिक्रिया त्रासदायक होत्या. कारण माझ्या आयुष्यात आधीच मी खूप अनावश्यक सूचना आणि सल्ले ऐकले होते. आणि अशा केंद्रांमध्ये जे ट्रान्सजेंडरच्या मदतीसाठी असल्याचं सांगितलं जातं तिथेही तुमची लैंगिकता आणि बाह्यरूपावरून तुम्हाला सल्ले मिळतात. जणू स्त्रीत्व आणि केस एकाचवेळी असू शकत नाही.

माझ्या सोशल मीडियावर अजूनही मला 'काळजीपोटी ट्रोल' केलं जातं. लोकांना खरंच असं वाटतं की ते मला मदत करत आहेत. मात्र, मला वाटतं त्यांनी हा विचार करायला हवा की, "त्या व्यक्तीला माझ्याकडून काय हवं, हे त्यालाच का विचारू नये?"
मला माझ्या शरीरावरच्या केसांची पहिल्यांदा घृणा वाटली ती मी दहा वर्षांचा असताना. माझी मोठी बहीण 13 वर्षांची होती. तिच्या हातावर थोडे केस येत होते. थोड्याच दिवसात तिला सगळे सल्ले देऊ लागले की तिने हे केस काढले पाहिजे. माझ्या काकू, मावशा तिला वॅक्सिंग आणि भुवया कोरायला सांगू लागल्या.
मलाही माझ्या शरीराच्या कुठल्याही अंगावर आलेल्या केसांची मला लाज वाटायला लागली. मी 11 वर्षांचा होतो तेव्हा माझ्या नाकावर छोटे-छोटे केस येऊ लागले होते. मी वडिलांच्या पाठी लागायचो की मला मिशी काढू द्या. ते नकार द्यायचे आणि मला त्याचा खूप त्रास झाला. माझ्या शरिरावर असलेल्या केसांमुळे मला शाळेत खूप चिडवायचे. माझे वर्गमित्र मला 'जनावर' म्हणायचे किंवा मी खूप घाण असल्याचं त्यांना वाटायचं.
मी बहिणीचं किंवा वडिलांचं रेझर कुणालाही न सांगता गपचूप आणायचो. घरात कुणी नसेल तेव्हा मी बाथरूममध्ये जाऊन शेव्ह करायचो. शेव्ह कशी करायची हे कुणी मला शिकवलं नाही आणि कुणाला विचारण्याची हिंमत माझ्यात नव्हती. त्यामुळे मी फक्त साबण आणि पाण्याने उलट्या दिशेने शेव्ह करायचो. त्यामुळे खूप त्रास व्हायचा. मला खूप खाज यायची आणि अवघडल्यासारखं व्हायचं. पण, तरीही मी ते सगळं थांबवलं नाही.
मी शॉवरखाली शेव्ह करायचो आणि मी शेव्ह केली आहे, हे कुणाला कळणार नाही, याची सगळी खबरदारी घ्यायचो. मला वाटायचं की मला केस आलेत त्यामुळे केस नसतानासुद्धा मी शेव्ह करायचो.
कुणाला माझ्या हातापायांवरचे केस दिसू नये म्हणून मी अंगभर कपडे घालायचो. मी पोहणंही बंद केलं. मी केस काढत होतो तरीदेखील मी पूर्ण कपडे घालायचो. जेणेकरून कुणीच मला चिडवू नये.
अमेरिकेवर 9/11चा हल्ला झाला तेव्हा मी दहा वर्षांचा होतो आणि त्यावेळी लोकांकडून खूप छळवणूक व्हायची. मी टेक्सासमधल्या एका छोट्या खेड्यात राहायचो. तिथे खूप कमी भारतीय होते. लोक आम्हाला दहशतवादी म्हणायचे. एकदा कुणीतरी म्हणालं, "तुम्ही आमच्याशी असं का वागता?" अचानक आमच्या काळ्या कातडीवरच्या केसांमुळे लोक आम्हाला संशयाच्या नजरेने बघू लागले आणि त्यांना आमची भीती वाटू लागली होती.
माझा तेरावा वाढदिवस माझ्यासाठी खऱ्या अर्थाने खूप महत्त्वाचा दिवस ठरला. कारण त्या दिवशी माझ्या वडिलांनी मला शेव्हिंगची परवानगी दिली होती. तो क्षण मला जशाचा तसा आठवतो. मला मी सुंदर असल्याचं जाणवलं आणि आता मी माझ्या गोऱ्या वर्गमित्रांसोबत बसू शकतो, असं मला वाटलं. आणि याचा प्रत्यक्ष परिणामही मला जाणवला. माझे वर्गमित्र आता माझ्या चांगले वागू लागले होते. कारण आता मी भीतीदायक नाही तर त्यांच्यासारखा सामान्य दिसू लागलो होतो.

मी उच्च माध्यमिक शाळेत गेलो आणि लोकांचा दृष्टीकोन पूर्ण बदलला. आता मला दाट दाढी येते, याचं इतरांना आकर्षण वाटू लागलं होतं. मी "Beards for Peace" नावाचा एक ग्रुपही जॉईन केला होता. तिथे आम्ही युद्ध-विरोधी विचार मांडायचो. "Most Environmentally Friendly" म्हणजेच सर्वाधिक पर्यावरणस्नेही म्हणून माझी निवड झाली होती. आता माझी दाढी भीतीदायक नाही तर 'हिप्पी' वाटू लागली होती.
शरीरावरचे सगळे केस काढण्याचं मी पूर्णपणे ठरवलं नव्हतं. मला फक्त एवढं वाटायचं की हा निर्णय माझा असायला हवा.
सौंदर्याच्या कल्पनेविषयी आपल्याला मिळालेली शिकवण खूपच मर्यादित आहे. गोरा रंग, केस नसणे, सडपातळ बांधा हे सुंदरतेचं लक्षण मानलं गेलं. मात्र, हे अपवाद आहेत आणि जगातल्या बहुतांश व्यक्ती तशा नसतात.
शरीरावरच्या केसांचा लैंगिकतेशी संबंध जोडायला नको. सर्वांच्या शरीरावर कुठे ना कुठे कमी-अधिक प्रमाणात केस असतातच. जे इतकं नैसर्गिक आहे त्यावर इतक्या क्रूरपणे आणि निदर्यीपणे लक्ष का ठेवलं जातं?
केस काढण्यासाठीच्या उत्पादनांचं मार्केटिंग करणाऱ्यांना अनेक प्रश्नांची उत्तरं द्यायला हवी. आपल्या शरीरावरच्या केसांना आपण स्वीकारलं तर रेझर, वॅक्स स्ट्रीप, क्रीम इतक्या लोकप्रिय रहाणार नाही.
मला माझ्या शरिरावरचे केस आवडतात. ते खूप आरामदायी आहेत. ते माझं स्वतःचं नैसर्गिक ब्लँकेट असल्यासारखंच आहे. माझ्या टॉपमधून काही केस बाहेर आल्याचं मला आवडतं. मी त्यांना माझा दागिना मानते. माझा लूक आणि माझ्या कपड्यांना ते कॉम्प्लिमेंट करतात.
मात्र, ट्रान्सजेंडर असूनही शरिरावरचे केस न काढल्याचे गंभीर परिणाम मला भोगावे लागले आहेत.
जेव्हा तुमची लैंगिकता निश्चित नसते तेव्हा तुम्हाला छळवणुकीला सामोरं जावं लागतंच. असं कुठलंच ठिकाण नाही जिथे मला शांतता मिळाली. रस्त्यात माझा छळ झाला, रेस्तराँमधून काढण्यात आलं. लोक विचित्र नजरेने माझ्याकडे बघायचे. सार्वजनिक ठिकाणी बाथरुममध्ये गेल्यावर मला चिडवायचे.
प्रत्यक्ष दिसणं आणि स्वतःहून तसं दाखवणं, यात खूप फरक आहे. आमच्या अशा दिसण्यामुळे आम्हाला सार्वजनिक ठिकाणी आणि ऑनलाईनदेखील छळवणुकीचा सामना करावा लागतो. खरंतर हे आहे की माझ्या सोशल मीडियावर तिरस्कार असलेले मेसेज टाकून मला ट्रोल केलं जातं.
अशाप्रकारच्या गैरवर्तणुकीचा सामना करणं, खूप त्रासदायक आहे. सातत्याने होणाऱ्या छळामुळे ट्रान्सजेंडर व्यक्तींमध्ये मानसिक ताणाचा दर खूप जास्त असल्याचं अभ्यासात आढळून आलंय.
यामुळे मला खूप काळजी आणि भीती वाटते. एकटं असतानाही आणि मित्रांसोबत असतानाही मी सतत काहीशा तणावात असतो. सततची हुरहुर त्रासदायक असते. याचा माझ्या शरीरावर परिणाम झाला आहे. मला सांधेदुखी झालीय.
या ताणातून बाहेर पडण्यासाठी सृजनशील होणं बंधनकारक असल्याचं मला वाटतं.
मी एखादं चित्र काढतो तेव्हा ती एक कला असते. मात्र, त्या सोबतच मी एका व्यापक जगात ट्रान्सजेंडर लोकांचं प्रतिनिधित्व करतो.
समाज तुम्हाला त्यांच्यातून बाहेर काढू बघतोय. त्यामुळे ट्रान्स लोकांनी सार्वजनिक स्थळी ठामपणे उभं राहणं महत्त्वाचं असल्याचं मला वाटतं.
मी स्वतःहून लोकांसमोर येतो तेव्हा मी इतरांसाठी एक स्रोत निर्माण करतो. मला बघितल्यावर एखादी व्यक्ती अशा ट्रान्सजेंडरला पहिल्यांदाच बघत असेल. खरंतर लिंग निश्चित नसणाऱ्याही अनेक व्यक्ती आहेत, हेच अनेकांना माहिती नाही.
मात्र, माझ्यासाठीही हे स्वतंत्र होण्यासारखं आहे. स्वतःचं असं सक्षम रूप बघून मला वाटतं, "वा, हे माझं सर्वांत स्वतंत्र रूप आहे."
मी शरीरावरचे केस काढले असते तर माझ्यासाठी आयुष्य बरंच सोपं झालं असतं. मात्र, इतरांना बरं वाटावं, यासाठी मी का माझे केस काढावे?
शरीरावर केस आणि एक छानशी हेअरस्टाईल म्हणजे, "हे जग माझंही आहे", हे ठासून सांगण्याचा माझा मार्ग आहे.
