अर्थशास्त्रासाठी अभिजित बॅनर्जींना नोबेल पुरस्कार जाहीर झाल्यानंतर काही तासांतच पहिली प्रतिक्रिया आली ती त्यांच्या आईची - प्रा. निर्मला बॅनर्जींची.
त्या माहेरच्या निर्मला पाटणकर. त्यांचा जन्म मुंबईत झाला. आणि शिक्षण मुंबईच्या एल्फिन्स्टन कॉलेजमध्ये. त्यांनी तिथे अर्थशास्त्रात पदवी मिळवली.
बीबीसी मराठीने प्रा. निर्मला बॅनर्जींशी कोलकात्यात संपर्क साधला, तेव्हा त्यांनी अस्खलित मराठीत स्वतःविषयी सांगितलं. "लंडनला गेल्यानंतर माझा मुंबईशी संपर्क कमी होत गेला. मी आता कोलकात्यात राहते. आता मुंबईत कुणी नातेवाईक नाही, त्यामुळे फारसं जाणं होत नाही."
83 वर्षांच्या निर्मला बॅनर्जी आता कोलकात्यात राहतात. त्यांच्या मुलाला, म्हणजे नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेत्या अभिजितना मातृभाषा मराठी येते का, असं विचारल्यावर त्या म्हणाल्या, "अभिजितला मराठी पुष्कळ समजतं, पण बोलता येत नाही. मी स्वतः इथे बांगला लिहायला, बोलायला शिकले."
प्रा. निर्मला यांनी इंग्रजीत विपुल लेखन केलंय. त्यांनी मराठीत लिखाण केलंय का, असं विचारल्यावर त्या खंत व्यक्त करत म्हणाल्या, "मी मुख्यतः लिखाण बायकांच्या विषयांवर केलं. मला मराठीत लिहायची इच्छा होती. खरं तर अजूनही आहे. पण मला 50-60 वर्षांआधीची मराठी ठाऊक आहे. इथे वाचायला मराठी साहित्यही मिळत नाही. त्यामुळे मराठीत लिहिण्याचा आत्मविश्वास नाही. व्याकरणाची चूक होणार नाही, पण शब्द आठवत नाहीत."
निर्मला बॅनर्जी यांनी EPWसाठी महिला आणि अर्थशास्त्र या विषयांवर केलेलं लिखाण इथे वाचता येईल.
'मी अभिजितला रागावणार आहे'
आपल्या मुलाला नोबेल मिळाल्यावर "मला नक्कीच खूप आनंद झालाय," असं त्या म्हणाल्या. मात्र "मी त्याला रागावणारे की त्याने मला याची काहीच कल्पना दिली नाही," असं त्या पत्रकारांशी बोलताना आधी म्हणाल्या.
अभिजित हे कोलकात्याचे तसेच भारताचे दुसरे नोबेल विजेते अर्थतज्ज्ञ आहेत, मात्र हा योगायोग नसून त्याचंही एक वेगळं कनेक्शन असल्याचं निर्मला बॅनर्जी यांनी सांगितलं.

"अमर्त्य सेन माझ्या पतीचे मित्र आहेत. 1963-65च्या काळात आम्ही बर्कलेमध्ये एकत्र होतो. तेव्हा आमच्या भेटी व्हायच्या. आता ते दोघंही (सेन आणि अभिजित) बोस्टनमध्ये एकत्र राहतात आणि ते नियमितपणे भेटतात," असं निर्मला यांनी माध्यमांशी बोलताना सांगितलं.
सध्याच्या देशात आर्थिक मंदी असल्याचं म्हटलं जातंय. तुम्ही काय म्हणाल, असं एका पत्रकाराने विचारलं असता, त्या सावधपणे म्हणाल्या "सध्या जे काही आकडे आहेत, त्यावरून तरी हेच दिसतंय. मात्र या आकड्यांवर किती भरवसा ठेवायचा, हाही प्रश्नच आहे."
अभिजित त्यांच्यासोबत अर्थतज्ज्ञ एस्थेर डूफ्लो आणि मायकल क्रिमर यांचाही या पुरस्कार विभागून देण्यात आला आहे.

एस्थेर यांना मिळालेल्या नोबेलवर त्या म्हणाल्या, "ही नक्कीच अभिमानाची गोष्ट आहे. त्या दोघांना एकत्र मिळाला याचा खूप आनंद आहे."
कोण आहेत अभिजित बॅनर्जी?
भारतीय वंशाचे अमेरिकन अर्थतज्ज्ञ अभिजीत बॅनर्जी यांना या वर्षीचा अर्थशास्त्राचा नोबेल पुरस्कार देण्यात आला आहे. त्यांच्यासोबत एस्थेर डूफ्लो आणि मायकल क्रिमर यांचाही या पुरस्कारात समावेश आहे.
2003 मध्ये अभिजीत बॅनर्जी आणि इतर संशोधकांनी Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) या सेंटरची स्थापना केली. गरिबी हटवण्यासाठी वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोन कसा आणता येईल, यावर J-PALमध्ये संशोधन केलं जात आहे.
जगभरात गरिबी हटवण्यासाठी अभिजीत बॅनर्जी यांनी त्यांच्या दोन सहकाऱ्यांबरोबर अनेक प्रयोग केले, असं नोबल समितीनं हा पुरस्कार जाहीर करताना म्हटलं. त्यांच्या या संशोधनामुळे गेल्या 20 वर्षांत खूप बदल घडला आहे.
