वयाच्या सातव्या वर्षी जर तुमचं मुल लठ्ठ असेल तर ही धोक्याची घंटा आहे. कारण वयाच्या अकराव्या वर्षापर्यंत त्याला नैराश्य गाठू शकतं.
लठ्ठ मुलांमध्ये अकारण चिंता तसंच भावनिक असंतुलन यांसारख्या मानसिक समस्या आढळून येत असल्याचं युकेमधील एका अभ्यासामधून समोर आलं आहे.
लठ्ठपणा आणि मानसिक आरोग्य या दोन्ही गोष्टी एकमेकांशी जोडलेल्या असतात, असं लिव्हरपूल येथील संशोधकांना आढळून आलं आहे. मुलं जशी मोठी होतात, तशा या समस्याही वाढत असल्याचं संशोधनातून समोर आलं आहे.
ज्या मुलींचा BMI (Body Mass Index) आवश्यकतेपेक्षा अधिक असतो, अशा मुलींना मुलांच्या तुलनेत नैराश्य लवकर ग्रासतं.
या समस्येमागची नेमकी कारणं काय आहेत, हे शोधण्याचा प्रयत्न मात्र संशोधनातून झाला नाही. लठ्ठपणा आणि मानसिक आजार या दोन्हीमागे दारिद्र्य हा एक घटक असल्याचं संशोधनातून मांडण्यात आलं आहे.
लठ्ठपणा आणि मानसिक आरोग्यावर केलेल्या या संशोधनातले निष्कर्ष हे ग्लास्गोमध्ये होणाऱ्या European Congress on Obesity मध्ये सादर करण्यात येतील.
संशोधकांनी 2000 ते 2002 या वर्षांत युकेमध्ये जन्मलेल्या 17 हजारांहून अधिक मुलांची माहिती गोळा करून त्याचं विश्लेषण केलं.
संशोधकांनी गोळा केलेल्या माहितीमध्ये मुलांची उंची आणि वजन यासोबतच त्यांना वयाच्या वेगवेगळ्या टप्प्यांवर भेडसावणाऱ्या भावनिक समस्यांची माहिती घेतली.
वयाच्या तिसऱ्या, पाचव्या, सातव्या, अकराव्या आणि चौदाव्या वर्षी या मुलांचं वर्तन नेमकं कसं होतं, याची माहिती पालकांकडूनच घेण्यात आली होती.
सातव्या वर्षापासून लठ्ठपणा आणि भावनिक समस्यांचा एकमेकांशी असलेला संबंध उघड व्हायला सुरूवात होते. त्यापूर्वी या दोन्हींमधला संबंध स्पष्टपणे दिसून येत नाही.
लठ्ठपणाचं दुष्टचक्र
आमच्या संशोधनातून लठ्ठपणा आणि भावनिक समस्यांचा संबंध स्पष्ट झाला, असं लिव्हरपूल युनिव्हर्सिटीमधील मानसशास्त्राच्या व्याख्याता डॉ. शार्लेट हार्डमन यांनी स्पष्ट केलं.

लठ्ठपणाच्या समस्येनं ग्रासलेल्या मुलांवर उपचार करणाऱ्यांसाठी ही नवीन माहिती उपयुक्त आहे. "बऱ्याचदा लोकांना असं वाटतं, की कमी खाल्लं आणि अधिक व्यायाम केल्यावर काहीच त्रास होणार नाही. पण हे इतकं सोपं नाहीये."
"वयाच्या सातव्या वर्षापासून ही मुलं लठ्ठपणा आणि मानसिक आजाराच्या दुष्टचक्रात अडकतात," असं डॉ. हार्डमन सांगतात.
लहान मुलांमध्ये मोठ्या प्रमाणावर दिसून येणाऱ्या या समस्या सार्वजनिक आरोग्याच्या दृष्टिनं चिंतेचा विषय आहे. कारण मोठेपणीही आरोग्यावर याचे दुष्परिणाम दिसून येतात.
