कोव्हिडसंदर्भातील माहितीचा विचार करता ती कधीही न संपणारी आहे, असं वाटतं आणि अनेकदा ती विरोधाभासी असल्याचीही जाणीव होते. पण सध्याच्या घडीला आपण कुठे आहोत?
कोव्हिड पॉझिटिव्ह आढळणाऱ्या रुग्णांची संख्या सातत्याने घटत चालली आहे. पण सातत्यानं त्याबाबत चर्चा करणं हे चुकीचं आहे का? शालेय मुलांमध्ये कोरोनाची साथ कमी होत असल्याचं चित्र आहे.
पण ते का? आणि अशीच स्थिती कायम राहील का? शिवाय मोठ्या वयोगटातील रुग्णांच्या संसर्गाकडे अधिक लक्ष देण्याची गरज आहे का? असाही प्रश्न उद्भवतो. कारण या वयोगटातील लोकांना सर्वाधिक धोका आहे.
कोव्हिडची माहिती ठेवण्याचे महत्त्वाचे मार्ग खालील आहेत:
कोरोना पॉझिटिव्ह रुग्ण, रुग्णालयात दाखल असलेले रुग्ण आणि कोरोनामुळं झालेले मृत्यू याचे अधिकृत आकडे.

प्रत्येकाचे स्वतंत्र असे गुण आणि वैशिष्ट्ये आहेत. त्यामुळं त्यातून वेगवेगळ्या पद्धतीनं माहिती समोर येत असते. त्या सर्वांचा एकत्रितपणे विचार केला तर वास्तवाच्या जवळ पोहोचणं शक्य होतं.
कमी होणारे आकडे
जवळपास प्रत्येक स्त्रोतातून मिळणाऱ्या माहितीत आपल्या आजुबाजुला कोव्हिडचं प्रचंड प्रमाण असल्याचं स्पष्ट होतं. पण त्याची घसरण सुरू झाली आहे.
कोरोनाचे ताजे आकडे (चाचणी करणाऱ्या आणि त्यात पॉझिटिव्ह आढळणाऱ्यांपैकी) शुक्रवारी 34,029 हे गेल्या आठवड्यातील शुक्रवारच्या 43,467 पेक्षा कमी आहेत.
या आकड्यांबाबतची सर्वांत मोठी अडचण म्हणजे काही लोक चाचणी करण्याची तयारी दर्शवतात तर काही तयारी दर्शवत नाहीत. विशेषतः रोजगारावर कोव्हिडचा परिणाम होणार असेल तर चाचणीचा विचार करतात.
इम्पिरियल मधील 'द रिअॅक्ट स्टडी' आणि ONS दोन्हीमध्ये लोकांची अचानक निवड करून ते आजारी आहेत किंवा नाही याची तपासणी केली जाते. त्यांच्यामार्फत विषाणूचा प्रसार तर होत नाही, हे याद्वारे तपासले जाते.
या पद्धतीमुळं कुठल्याही प्रकारचा भेदभाव होत नाही. मात्र, लोकांना विषाणूची लागण झाल्यानंतर काही काळाने ते आजारी पडतात. त्यामुळं समोर आलेलं चित्र हे कायम फारसं ताजं नसतं.
कोरोनाच्या पहिल्या लाटेनंतर विषाणूच्या संसर्गाची सर्वोच्च पातळी रिअॅक्टने नोंदवली होती. पण गेल्या काही दिवसांत त्यात घसरण व्हायला सुरुवात झाली आहे. ONS च्या अंदाजानुसार युकेमध्ये 55 पैकी एका व्यक्तीला कोव्हिडची लागण झाली. म्हणजे एकूण 12 लाख 70 हजार. मात्र त्यांच्याकडे असलेले आकडे 30 ऑक्टोबरचे आहेत, त्यामुळं तेही जुने आहेत.
युकेमध्ये R number म्हणजे एका व्यक्तीनं इतरांमध्ये पसरवलेला कोरोनाचा सरासरी संसर्ग हा 0.9 आणि 1.1 च्या दरम्यान आहे. त्यामुळं संसर्गाचं प्रमाण स्थिर असल्याचं दिसतं. पण ज्या पद्धतीनं हे आकडे मिळवण्यात आले आहेत, त्यावरून तेही जुन्या काही आठवड्यांपूर्वीच्या परिस्थितीचे दर्शक आहेत.
Zoe कोव्हिड स्टडी अॅपवर लोक त्यांच्या लक्षणांबाबत माहिती देतात आणि त्यानुसार माहिती अपडेट केली जाते. या अॅपच्या आकडेवारीनुसार गेल्या आठवड्यात 5% घसरण झालेली पाहायला मिळत आहे.
"आपण 2021 मधील कोव्हिडच्या अखेरच्या शिखरावर असू शकतो, अशी आशा आहे," असं लंडनच्या किंग्ज कॉलेजमध्ये माहितीचं विश्लेषण करणारे प्राध्यापक टिम स्पेक्टर म्हणाले.
आकड्यांचा खेळ नको
कोरोनाचा विचार करता लागण झालेल्यांची संख्या हीच सर्वांत महत्त्वाची असली तरी, केवळ लागण झालेल्यांच्या आकड्यांचा विचार करणं हे धोकादायक आहे.
"जेव्हा कोरोना रुग्णांची संख्या झपाट्यानं वाढते तेव्हा आम्हाला प्रचंड काळजी वाटते. तर जेव्हा संख्या कमी होऊ लागते तेव्हा आम्ही निश्चिंत होतो. पण अशाने चालणार नाही," असं मत एडिनबर्ग विद्यापीठाचे मार्क वूलहाऊस म्हणाले.
वार्विक विद्यापीठाचे प्राध्यापक माईक टिल्डस्ले यांनीही यावर सहमती दर्शवली, "लोकांना रोज नवनवीन आकडे दाखवल्यास त्यांनी नेमकं जे पाहायला हवं, त्यापासून त्याचं लक्ष विचलित होतं."
डेटाचा विचार करता सध्या दोन प्रकारच्या साथींबाबत काळजी किंवा विचार करणं गरजेचं आहे.
यापैकी पहिला गट म्हणजे शाळेतील मुलं ज्यांना अद्याप लस देण्यात आलेली नाही. पण तुलनेनं त्यांना धोका कमी आहे. तर दुसरा गट धोकादायक वयोगटातील आहे. त्यांना सध्या बूस्टर डोस दिले जात आहेत.
शालेय मुलांतही घटत आहेत आकडे
शालेय विद्यार्थ्यांमध्ये सप्टेंबर आणि ऑक्टोबरदरम्यान कोरोना प्रकरणांची संख्या वाढली होती. पण ती आता झपाट्यानं कमी होत आहे. ONS डेटामध्येही ते स्पष्ट झालं आहे.
"प्रमाण अजूनही जास्त असलं तरी, गेल्या काही आठवड्यांत प्रथमच इंग्लंडच्या माध्यमिक शाळेतील मुलांमध्ये कोरोनाचा संसर्ग घटत असल्याचं पाहायला मिळत आहे," असं मत ONS च्या सारा क्रॉफ्ट्स म्हणाल्या.
ही घट होण्यामागं अनेक कारणं आहेत. त्यात शाळेत झालेल्या संसर्गामुळं वाढलेली प्रतिकार शक्ती, विद्यार्थ्यांचे झालेले लसीकरण आणि हाफ टर्म पद्धतीमुळं मुलांचा एकमेकांशी कमी संपर्क याचा समावेश आहे. 12 महिन्यांपूर्वीही अशीच परिस्थिती आढळली होती. पण शाळा सुरू झाल्या आणि परिस्थिती बिघडली असं React चे शास्त्रज्ञ म्हणाले.

मुलांमध्ये कोव्हिड पसरू नये यासाठी शाळेच्या सुट्या कारणीभूत आहेत की हर्ड इम्युनिटी याबाबत मात्र नेमका अंदाज येऊ शकलेला नाही.
"हा महत्त्वाचा प्रश्न आहे. त्यामागे दुसरं कारण असावं अशी मला आशा आहे," असं लंडन स्कूल ऑफ हायजिन अँड ट्रॉपिकल मेडिसीनचे प्राध्यापक जॉन एडमंड्स म्हणाले.
वृद्ध लोकांबाबत समस्या?
तरुणांमध्ये कोरोनाची वाढ होण्याचं आणि कमी होण्याचं प्रमाण पाहता, यात ज्या लोकांना प्रामुख्यानं रुग्णालयात दाखल होण्याची कमी गरज लागू शकते त्यांचंच अधिक प्रमाण आहे.
"कमी धोका असलेल्या गटांमध्ये कमी जास्त होणारं संसर्गाचं प्रमाण हे दिशाभूल करणारं असून, खरी काळजी धोका असलेल्या वयोगटाची आहे," असं प्राध्यापक वूलहाऊस म्हणाले.
"या आकड्यांचा विचार करता जास्त वयोगटातील रुग्णांच्या संख्येत सातत्यानं वाढच होत आहे. मला त्याची काळजी आहे," वूलहाऊस सांगतात.
युकेमध्ये रोज रुग्णालयात दाखल व्हावं लागणाऱ्यांचा आकडा हा 1000 पेक्षा थोडा जास्त आहे.
"रुग्णालयात दाखल होणाऱ्यांमध्ये प्रचंड वाढ होण्याची सर्वांना भीती होती. पण अद्याप तसं झालेलं नाही. मात्र तरीही धोका पूर्णपणे संपलेला नाही,"असं प्राध्यापक टिल्डस्ले यांनी बीबीसी न्यूजशी बोलताना सांगितलं.
प्राध्यापक स्पेक्टर यांच्या Zoe अॅपच्या डेटाचा विचार करता वृद्धांमध्ये संसर्गाचं प्रमाण सातत्यानं वाढत आहे. हा प्रकार चिंताजनक आहे. पण बूस्टर डोस मोहिमेमुळं ही मोठी समस्या मार्गी लागू शकते, असं स्पेक्टर म्हणाले.
"मुलांमध्ये साथीचं प्रमाण प्रचंड आहे. ते त्यांच्याद्वारे पालकांपर्यंत आणि त्यांच्या मार्फत इतरांपर्यंत संसर्गाला कारणीभूत ठरतं. पण लसीकरणामुळं याचा स्फोट होत नाही," असं प्राध्यापक एडमंड्स म्हणाले.
जर मुलांमधील संसर्गाचं हे प्रमाण कमी झालं, तर सर्वांसाठीचा धोका कमी होईल, असंही ते म्हणाले.

आपण कुठल्या दिशेनं जात आहोत?
गेल्यावर्षी कोरोनामुळं लॉकडाऊन लावावे लागले होते. त्या तुलनेत आपण खूप चांगल्या स्थितीत आहोत, हे स्पष्ट आहे.
पण हिवाळा कसा जाणार याबाबत काहीही निश्चतपणे सांगता येणार नाही.
मुलांमधलं प्रमाण कमी होत राहील का? तसं झालं तर इतरांचं प्रमाण त्यामुळं कमी होईल का? बूस्टर डोस मोहीम कशी राबवली जाईल? हवामान कसं राहिल (थंडी वाढल्याने इनडोअर मिटींग वाढतील)? इतर रोगांची स्थिती कशी असेल आणि त्याचा NHS वर काय परिणाम होईल?
विषाणूच्या वर्तनामध्ये बदल झाला तरी साथीची दिशा बदलू शकते. साथीच्या पूर्वी जसं मुलांचं जीवन होतं, त्यासारखं काहीसं रुळावर येत असल्याचं दिसत आहे. पण इतर वयोगटातील लोकांबाबत तसं कधी होणार. तसंच डेल्टा - AY.4.2 सारख्या इतर व्हेरिएंट्सचीही शक्यता आहे. त्यामुळंही अडचणी वाढू शकतात.
"हे संपूर्ण अत्यंत गुंतागुंतीचं चित्र आहे. त्यामुळं नेमकं काय घडणार हे सांगणं अत्यंत कठिण आहे," असं प्राध्यापक वूलहाऊस म्हणाले.
