भारत सरकारच्या अपारंपरिक ऊर्जा स्रोत वापरावर प्राधान्य देण्याच्या धोरणावर पाऊल ठेवत अनेक तांत्रिक आणि आर्थिक समस्यांवर मात करून हा महत्त्वाकांक्षी उपक्रम राबवणारी सुला हि पर्यावरणवादी कंपनी असून, कंपनीच्या आस्थापानेपासुंच अनेक शाश्वत उपक्रम राबवत आली आहे.

नेट मीटर पॉलिसी – या धोरणात ग्राहक सौर विद्युत निर्मिती करून त्याचा वापर स्वत: करता करून अतिरिक्त ऊर्जा महावितरणाकडे पाठवू शकतो. खास याकरता बसवण्यात येणार्या नेट-मीटर मध्ये ग्राहकाने जमवलेल्या विजेच्या निर्यात व आयात मापनाची व्यवस्था असल्यामुळे ग्राहकाचे मासिक विद्युत देयक आयात-निर्यातीचे समायोजन करूनच येते. कंपन्या व वैयक्तिक सौर ऊर्जा वापरास आणि विद्युत निर्मिती करण्यास मोठी चालना मिळाली आहे.

याचे फायदे असे:
हे नेट मीटर आयात व निर्यातीचा हिशोब स्वत:च ठेवून कार्य करत असल्याने ग्राहक आपण तयार केलेल्या विजेचा संपूर्ण वापर करून घेऊ शकतो.
वीज तयार होऊन महावितरणाकडे जात असल्याने आपण बनवलेली वीज साठवून ठेवण्यासाठी लागणाऱ्या बॅटरी किंवा इतर सर्व पायाभूत सुविधा उभ्या करून त्यांना लागणारी जागा, वापर व देखभालीचा खर्च वाचतो.
या उपक्रमामुळे ग्राहक उपलब्ध जागेचा वापर करून अधिकाधिक ऊर्जा निर्माण करून स्वयंपूर्ण होतानाच महावितरणाच्या देखील कार्यभागाचा काही वाटा स्वत:च वाटून घेईल. यासोबतच अपारंपरिक ऊर्जास्रोताचा वापर करून आपोआपच पर्यावरणाला मोठा हातभार लावेल.
अशा उपक्रमांमुळे महावितरणाची देखील वीज बचत होईल. शिवाय ग्राहक स्वतःच्या जागेत वीजनिर्मिती करत असल्याने विद्युत वाहन करताना होणारी प्रचंड वीज घट देखील टळेल. आता सुला आपल्या स्वत:च्या वापराकरता आपल्या एकूण वापरापैकी ५०% वीज स्वत: तयार करते. या नेट मिटरींग प्रकल्पामुळे कंपनीची वीज बिलाची आणखी १०-१५% बचत होऊ शकते असे सुलाच्या महाव्यवस्थापक (प्रकल्प) श्री. त्रंबक ओतूरकर यांनी सांगितले. थोड्याच कालावधीत सुलाचे संपूर्ण हॉस्पिटलिटी युनिटच १००% अपारंपरिक ऊर्जास्रोतांवर चालवण्याचा मानस श्री ओतूरकर यांनी व्यक्त केला.
सुरुवातीला जरी हि प्रणाली समजावून घेण्यास वेळ लागला, तरीही राज्य सरकार आणि स्थानिक महावितरण अधिकाऱ्यांच्या प्रयत्नांमुळे व पुढाकार घेऊन केलेल्या मदतीमुळे आम्ही शाश्वत ऊर्जेकडे आणखी एक यशस्वी पाऊल उचलू शकलो, डॉक्टर नीरज अग्रवाल यांनी सांगितले.
शेतीमालावर अवलंबून असलेल्या सुला विनयार्ड्स कडून सतरा लाख पन्नास हजार युनिट्स सौरऊर्जेची निर्मिती केली जात आहे. यातून २४३० घरांना वर्षभर मिळेल इतकी वीजनिर्मिती होत आहे. सुलाच्या एकूण वीज वापरा पैकी पन्नास टक्के विजेची बचत या उपक्रमातून साधली जात आहे. इतरही कृषी जोडधंदे किंवा कृषी पूरक उद्योगांनी अशा ऊर्जेची निर्मिती करावी व बचत साधावी याकरता आदर्श ठेवला आहे. कोळसा व खनिजतेल या पारंपरिक ऊर्जास्रोतांच्या वापरामध्ये कमी आल्याने पर्यावरण संवर्धनाच्या
दिशेने उचललेले सुलाचे हे पाऊल उल्लेखनीय आहे, यात शंका नाही.
