4 डिसेंबरला भारतीय नौदलदिन असतो. 1971 मध्ये भारताच्या नौदलाने पाकिस्तान विरूद्धच्या युद्धात कराची बंदरावर हल्ला करण्यात, विशाखापट्टणवरचा हल्ला परतवण्यात आणि पूर्व पाकिस्तानवरच्या नेव्हीचे उच्चाटन करण्यात महत्त्वाची कामगिरी बजावली होती. या कामगिरीचं नाव होतं ऑपरेशन ट्रायडंट. 4 डिसेंबरला ही कामगिरी यशस्वी झाली. या कामगिरीला सलाम म्हणून भारतीय नौदल हा 'नेव्ही डे' साजरा करते.
भारतीय नौदलाची व्यवस्था ही छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज यांच्या काळापासून सुरू झाली. कान्हाजी आंग्रे यांचे नौदलामध्ये मोठे योगदान असल्यामुळे आजही आयएनएस या नावाने नौदलाची ओळख ठेवण्यात आली आहे. शिवाजी राजांनी समुद्रामार्गाचे महत्त्व त्याकाळी जाणले. उत्तर भारताकडे त्यांचे बारकाईने लक्ष असायचे. जिथून मुघलानी भारतात पाय ठेवलले त्या प्रांताच्या सुरक्षेवर करडी नजर ठेऊन शत्रूला धूळ चारण्याचे काम शिवरायांनी त्या काळी केले. तेव्हापासून नौदलाचे महत्त्व आपल्या देशात आहे.

भारताला लाभलेल्या भौगोलिक रचनेमुळे नौदल अधिक सक्षम करण्याची गरज निर्माण झाली. जगातला सर्वात मोठा असा हिंदी महासागर ज्यामधून जगाचा 80 टक्के व्यापार होतो. मध्य-पूर्व आशियापर्यंत महासागर पसरलेला आहे. भारताच्या भौगोलिक रचनेमुळे देशातली नऊ राज्ये ही समुद्रकिनार्या जवळ आहेत. त्या प्रांतातील सर्वात मोठे उद्योग हे समुद्रकिनारी आहेत. आज मोठ्या प्रमाणात तेलाची निर्यात होते. या सर्वामध्ये नौदलाची जबाबदारी मोठी आहे.
नौदलाची यंत्रणा सक्षम आहे. पण अत्याधुनिक तंत्रज्ञानाचा वापर होत असताना यामध्येही काही अद्यावत तंत्रज्ञानाचे प्रोग करणे ही काळाची गरज ठरणार आहे. कारण जगभरात आतंकवादी हल्ले वाढताना दिसत आहेत. भारतामध्ये आलेले बहुतेक शत्रू हे सागरी मार्गानेच आल्याचा इतिहास आहे. याचा आढावा घ्यायचा झाल्यास ज्या ब्रिटिशांनी भारतावर 150 वर्षे राज्य केले ते ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनीच्या नावाने समुद्र मार्गानेच आले होते.
