40च्या दशकातील दिल्ली
गांधीजींची नात तारा गांधी भट्टाचार्य 40च्या दशकात आपले वडील देवदास गांधींसोबत दिल्लीत राहत होती. त्यांनी आपल्या संस्मरणांमध्ये लिहिेले आहे की जेव्हा आम्हाला काही चांगले भोजन करायची इच्छा होती तेव्हा आम्ही जुन्या दिल्लीच्या रेल्वे स्टेशनवर जात होतो. प्लेटफॉर्मचे तिकिट विकत घेत होतो. डायनिंग हॉलमध्ये जेवणाचे ऑर्डर देत होतो. त्या वेळेस असे मानले जात होते की दिल्लीतील चविष्ट भोजन येथे नक्की मिळेल.
काही अधिक संस्मरणात असे आढळून आले आहे की काश्मिरी गेटमध्ये फारच प्रसिद्ध कार्लटन रेस्टोंरेंट होते, जे आता बंद आहे. येथे जॉज आणि म्युझिक ग्रुप्सचे प्रोग्रॅम होत होते. दिल्लीला ब्रिटिशकाळाचे मुख्यालय 1911 मध्ये बनवण्यात आले. त्यानंतर दिल्ली बदलू लागली. त्या वेळेस दिल्लीचे सर्वात जास्त सांस्कृतिक आणि अभ्यासासाठी चांगली जागा म्हणजे सिविल लाइंस, हेमिल्टन रोड, तीस हजारी आणि काश्मिरी गेट मानले जात होते. त्या वेळेस दिल्लीला सुंदर आणि योग्य बनवण्यासाठी जी संस्था काम करत होती ती होती दिल्ली अंप्रूव्हमेंट ट्रस्ट, ज्याने नवी दिल्लीची रूपरेखा तयार केली होती. दिल्लीचे हृदय म्हणजे कनॉट प्लेस तेव्हा कनॉट सर्कलच्या नावेने ओळखले जात होते. येथेच रिट्स सिनेमा होता, जवळच नॉवेल्टी आणि मिनर्वा. त्या वेळेस बस आणि मोटार गाडी फारच कमी होत्या. स्त्रिया घराबाहेर फारच कमी पडायच्या.
सोनेरी पडद्याचे नायक
अॅक्टर सिंगर के. एल. सहगल 40च्या दशकातील सोनेरी पडद्याचे नायक होते. जो पर्यंत ते जिवंत होते त्यांची लोकप्रियता कायम होती. नूरजहां सर्वात लोकप्रिय गायिका होती. 1947 मध्ये त्या पाकिस्तानात गेल्या. तेव्हा सुरैयाने त्यांची जागा घेतली.

करेंसीवर सिंह स्तंभ
कागदाचा नोट नाशिकच्या प्रेसमध्ये छापण्यात येत होता. यावर किंग जॉर्ज पंचमचे फोटो असायचे. ऑगस्ट 1940मध्ये दुसर्या विश्व युद्धाच्या दिवसात जेव्हा 1 रुपयाची नवीन नोट छपून आली तेव्हा त्यात सुरक्षा फितेचा वापर सुरू झाला. स्वतंत्रातनंतर असे जाणवले की नोटांवर किंग जॉर्जच्या फोटोच्या जागेवर महात्मा गांधींचे फोटो असायला पाहिजे, पण तेव्हा नोटांवर गांधींच्या फोटोच्या जागेवर सारनाथचे चार सिंहांच्या स्तंभांना कोरण्यात आले.
काय पठण केले जात होते
* 40च्या दशकात भारताची साक्षरता दर 16.1टक्के होती (आता किमान 75 टक्के)
* लेखकांनी तत्कालिक सामाजिक आव्हानांवर लिखाण सुरू केले. 40च्या दशकात प्रकाशित काही चर्चित पुस्तके.
* ट्विटलाइट इन देल्ही (1940) अहमद अली -दिल्लीच्या मध्यमवर्गीय मुस्लिम परिवाराची कथा. पहिला उपन्यास होता, ज्यात ब्रिटिश राजकडून आजादीची मागणी करण्यात आली होती.
* द इंग्लिश टीचर (1945) आर. के. नारायण : हे मालगुडी कस्ब्याच्या इंग्रजी टीचरची आत्मकथात्मक पुस्तक होते.
वृत्तपत्रांमध्ये जाहिरात
वर्तमान पत्रांमध्ये जास्त करून जाहिरात इंग्रजी आणि ब्लॅक अँड व्हाईटमध्ये असायची. ह्या जाहिराती इंग्रजी वर्तमान पत्रात प्रकाशित होत होत्या, ज्याचे रेखांकन आणि हाताने तयार केलेले चित्रांची मदत घेण्यात येत होती. 40च्या दशकापर्यंत दिल्ली, मुंबई, कलकत्ता आणि मद्रास मोठ्या बाजारात बदलले होते. म्हणून या शहरांमध्ये प्रकाशित होणारे इंग्रजी वृत्तपत्रांमध्ये बर्याच जाहिरात देण्यात येत होत्या. 1941मध्ये लक्स साबणाने अॅक्ट्रेस लीला चिटणीस यांना मॉडेलच्या रूपात प्रयोग केला होता.
