काश्मीरमधील शंकराचार्य मंदिर हे अतिशय प्राचीन असून ख्रिस्त पूर्व 200 साली बांधल्याचे आढळून येते. प्राचीन काश्मिरी पद्धतीच्या या मंदिराच्या बांधकामातून त्या वेळेच्या सिंहारा पद्धतीने बांधलेले छत दिसते. येथील घुमटे घोडय़ाच्या नालेच्या आकारात बांधलेले असून शिल्पकलेचे उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण आहे. हे मंदिर सर्वप्रथम सम्राट अशोकाचे पुत्र झळुका यांनी बांधले.

मंदिराची पुनर्बाधणी गोप आदित्य यांनी केली. गोप आदित्य यांनी 253 ते 328 पर्यंत यावर येथे राज्य केले. असे म्हणतात की हिंदूंचे महान गुरू श्री शंकराचार्य दक्षिण भारतातून काश्मीरमध्ये हिंदू धर्माच्या पुनरुत्थानासाठी आले होते. ते या टेकडीच्या शिखरावर काहीकाळ राहिले. म्हणून या टेकडीला शंकराचार्य टेकडी असेही म्हणतात. हे मंदिर एका रुंद दगडावर उभे असून या मंदिराला अष्टकोनी आकाराचा 13 पदरी पाया आहे. तसेच याच आकाराचे मंदिराच्या इमारतीवर छत असून त्या छतावर 3.5 फूट उंचीच्या भितींचे बांधकाम केले आहे. मंदिराच्या मध्यभागी हौद असून त्यात लिंग आहे. संपूर्ण बांधकाम दगडाचे असून त्यामध्ये कुठेही सिमेंटचा वापर केलेला दिसत नाही. हे मोठे आश्चर्यच म्हणायला हवे. कुठल्या मिश्रणाद्वारे दगड एकमेकांना जोडले याचे कुतूहल आजही वाटते.
