अरुणाचल कसले पाहिले? अरुणाचलचा एक लहानसा कोपरा पाहायचा मला योग आला. त्या मागासलेल्या प्रदेशात चि. अमोलची बदली झाली आणि थोडेस वाईट वाटले बापरे केवढ्या दूर गेला हा मुलगा? मनाला ग्रासून टाकले ह्या विचारांनी. ह्या विचारांत चूर असतांनाच ह्यांनी दोन तिकीटे माझ्यापुढे सरकविले. कलकत्यांचे! कलकत्याहून आसाममध्ये डिब्रुगडला जायचे आणि तिथून अरुणाचलमध्ये प्रवेश करायचा आयुष्यातला पहिलाच एवढा मोठा प्रवास. पण अगदी सुखासमाधानाने आम्ही डिब्रुगडहून विमानाने पासिघाटला पोहोचलो.
पासिघाटहून चार पांच तास जीपचा प्रवास करून आम्ही अलाँग गाठले. अलाँग एक छोटेसे ठिकाण आहे. जिल्हाचे मुख्यालय सियाम नदीच्या काठावर वसलेले. 10-15 हजार लोक वस्तीचे चिमुकले गाव. सर्व कार्यालये तिथे आहेत. 1962 साली चीनने ह्याच्या जवळचे एक ठाणे जिंकले होते. पुन्हा हिंदुस्थानने कब्जा करून ते आपल्या ताब्यांत घेतले. चीनला खूप जवळ असल्यामुळे मिलीटरी खूप आहे तिथे, स्थानिक लोकांपेक्षा मिलीटरी आणि ऑफिसर लोकांचीच संख्या लक्षात येते.
पासीघाटला आम्ही 11 वाजता विमातळावर उतरलो आणि एका वेगळ्याच संस्कृतीचे दर्शन आम्हाला घडले. सर्वप्रथम ज्या मायभूमीला भारभूत होऊन आमची जीप जात होती त्या भूमातेच्या कोरलेल्या खडकाचे दर्शन झाले. पहाड फोडून रस्ते तयार केले होते. एकीकडे झुळझुळ वाहणारी सियाम नदी तर दुसरीकडे हिरवागार गाऊन घातलेला हिमालय सृष्टिच्या भव्य आणि दिव्य कलात्मकतेचा साक्षात्कारच जणू! सर्व पहाडी मुलुख.
पहाड फोडून ट्रक बस आणि जीप ह्या गाड्या, जेमतेम जातील येवढेच लहान रुंदीचे रस्ते. रस्त्याच्या एका बाजूला उंच उंच पर्वत तर दुसर्या बाजूला दरी अनंतात वाहणारी खळखळ नदी किंवा झुळझुळणारा नाला. विराट, विशाल आणि कोमलही रूप दृष्टिस पडले आणि मन थक्क झाले. मोठ मोठ्या डोंगरावर माती दगड किंवा खडक कुठेच दिसले नाही. केवळ मोठमोठ्या बांबूचे वन आणि अनेक प्रकारच्या वनस्पतींनी नटलेले डोंगर. डोंगरातून उगम पावलेली सियाम नदी मानसरोवरातून उगम पावलेल्या सियांग नदीला पांगींग नांवाच्या गावाजवळ येऊन मिळले. ह्या दोन नद्यांचा संगम मनाचा ठाव घेणारा आहे. ह्या दोन नद्या हातात हात घालण्यापूर्वी अरुणाचलचा खूप प्रदेश व्यापतात. अरुणाचल आसाममध्ये या संगमाला ब्रह्मपुत्रा हे नाव देतात. अलाँगपासून ह्या नद्यांचा संगम 15 ते 20 किलोमीट दूर आहे.

अलाँग जिल्ह्यात कामकी नावाचे एक लहानसे गाव आहे. तिथे सरकारी डेअरी आहे. सर्व जिल्ह्यात येथून दुधाचा पुरवठा होतो. इथे गाईचेच दुध वापरतात म्हशी नाहीतच. इथे मिथून नावाचे जनावर मोठे मानाचे मानले आहे. 'मिथून' हा 'गवा' म्हणजेच 'बायसन' सारखा प्राणी आहे. कामकीच्या डेअरीत मिथून आणि तिडकर्या गाई ह्यांचे क्रॉसबीड करून नवीन प्रकारच्या जनावराची निर्मिती करतात. ते जनावर तिकडल्या गाईप्रमाणेच होते पण धिप्पाड होते. त्याचे दूधही वापरण्यांत येते.
मिथून जेवढे जास्त 'ज्याकडे असतील तेवढा तो माणूस श्रीमंत असे समजतात. लग्नकार्यात मिथून मारून त्याचे मांस सर्व गांवात वाटतात. आपल्याकडे जस 'कार' दाराशी असली की आपण त्यांना श्रीमंत किंवा बडा समजतो तसेच गणा ज्याच्या घरी त्याच्या घरी मुलगी देणे योग्य, कारण प्रतिष्ठीत तो बडा समजतात. अरुणाचलच्या जंगलात मिथून आणि डुक्कर एवढीच जनावरे दिसतात. अरुणाचलचे एक वैशिष्ठ, तिथे चिमणी, पाखरे ह्यांचा खूप अभाव जाणवतो.
सकाळी 5.30 वाजताच झुंजूमुंज सुरू होते पण सूर्यनारायणाचे प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन हिवाळ्यात 12 ते 1 च्या दरम्यान होते. तोपर्यंत थंडी थंडी. साडेबारा ते 1 वाजता आलेले नारायणराव 3.30 ते 4 वाजताच आपल्या परतीचा प्रवास सुरू करतात त्या वेळेला सरकारी कर्मचार्यांची आठवण आली. साडेचारला अंधार होतो आणि साडेपाच वाजता रात्र! वीज नव्यानेच सुरू झाल्यामुळे विजेचा पुरवठा जेवढा हवा तेवढा होत नाही.
त्यामुळे रात्र फारच मोठी आणि कंटाळवाणी वाटते. उन्हाळ्यात म्हणजेच पावसाळ्यात (इथे दोनच ऋतू आहेत उन्हाळा व हिवाळा) कमालीचा पाऊस पडतो. धो धो पाऊस पडला की लगेच सूर्य उगवतो आणि इतकी उष्णता ओकतो की अंगाची आग आग होते. असा हा उन पावसाचा खेळ मी तरी पहिल्यांदाच अनुभवला. सूर्याची प्रखरता फारच प्रखरतेने जाणवते. आणि अरुणाचा 'आंचल' ह्या प्रदेशावर फारच प्रेमाने फिरतो असे जाणवते.
इकडील गावाची नावे जरा आपलेच वैशिष्ट्य राखून आहेत. 'इकीयांग', 'इटानगर', कामकी, काम्बुंग, काईंग कांबुक, जीनींग, पेनींग वगैरे वगैरे.
अलाँगला रामकृष्ण मिशनची शाळा आहे. 'रामकृष्ण मिशन स्कूल' हे अलाँगचे भूषण आहे. शाळेत 1000 च्या वर विद्यार्थी शिकतात. पैकी 750 विद्यार्थी शाळेच्या वसतीगृहात राहातात. ही मुले तिथली स्थानिक मुले आहेत. 4/5 वर्षाची मुले आई-वडिलांना सोडून वसतीगृहात राहतात. मागासलेल्या जमातीचा उद्धार करावा म्हणूनच ही शाळा सुरू झाली पण सर्व सुशिक्षत वर्गही आपल्या मुलांना ह्याच शाळेत शिकवितो.
त्यामुळे शाळेत शिस्त वाखडण्याजोगीच आहे. अभ्यासक्रम उच्च प्रतीचा आहे. तिथे रोज रात्री 5.30 वाजता प्रार्थना होते त्यावेळेला वसतीगृहातील विद्यार्थी आणि शिक्षक एकत्र जमतात, प्रार्थना हॉलमध्ये सर्व धर्मसंस्थापकांचे मोठे मोठे फोटो लावले आहे. प्रार्थनेच्या वेळेस तबला पेटीचा उपयोग केला जातो. सर्वत्र मंगल मंगल वातावरण निर्माण होते.

इथल्या लोकांचा बांधा रंगरूप साधारण चीन लोकांसारखाच आहे. उंचीने ठेंगणे, रंगाने गोरे, लहान डोळ्याचे आणि चापट चेहेर्याचे असे हे लोक. येथे पुरुषांपेक्षा बायका जास्त कष्टाळू. पाठीला मुल बांधून सतत कामांत दंग असतात. जंगलात जाऊन तिकडला भाजीपाला आणावा आणि उकडून मीठ लावून तो उकडलेल्या तांदळाबरोबर खावा बस! हेच ह्यांच मुख्य खाण. खरं म्हणजे तिथल्या पहाडी जंगलात मसाल्याचे पदार्थ खूप होतात पण त्यांचा वापर करणे ह्यांना माहितच नाही. जंगलात जातांना विळ्या सारखा एक अवजार कमरेला बांधतात त्याला 'दाव' असे म्हणतात. बायका वरून मोठं ब्लाऊज खाली लुंगी आणि डोक्याला कपडा बांधतात. पाठीवर बांबूनेच विणलेली विशिष्ठ पद्धतीची टोपली बांधून त्यांत बरेच ओझे घालून घरी येतात. घरं सारी बांबूचीच! झोपड्याच म्हणाना त्यांना त्या झोपड्यांवर छत असतं जंगलातील मोठमोठ्या पानांचं!
कलाकुसरीची काम बांबूपासूनच जास्त करतात. एक दिवस आम्हाला इंकीयाँगला जाण्याचा योग आला. अलाँगपासून फक्त चार तासाच्या अंतरावर वसलेले हे गांव सुद्धा सियांग नदीच्या काठावरच वसले आहे. नदीच्या काठाकाठानी हिमालयाचा सहारा घेत आम्ही चार वाजता तिथे पोहोचलो. दिवस थंडीचे होते. आम्ही सृष्टिसौंदर्याचा आस्वाद घेत घेत तिथल्या 'सर्कीट हाऊस' मध्ये पोहोचलो, तेव्हां दुपारी चार वाजता संध्याकाळ झाली होती.
सियांग नदीच्या पाण्यांत गावाच्या दिव्याचे प्रतिबिंब पडून चमचम चमकत होते. जणू काही दीपमाळ लावून कोणीतरी विधाता शांतपणे दिवाळीच साजरी करीत होता. नयनमनोहर शांत आणि सुखद अस ते सौंदर्य होते. अशा ह्या सुंदर दृष्याने आमचे स्वागत केले. सर्कीट हाऊसमध्ये आम्ही पोहोचलो आणि केवळ विधात्याचीच नक्कल मानवानी केली की काय अशी शंका आली कारण ते सर्कीट हाऊसही तेवढेच सुंदर सजविलेले होते.
सकाळी कडाक्याच्या थंडीत उठायचं खूप जीवावर आलं होत पण म्हटलं पाहू तरी उठून, पुन्हा थोडंच यायच आहे या गावी. सूर्योदयापूर्वी (किती वाजले होते ते देव जाणे) आम्ही उठलो सर्कीट हाऊसच्या परिसरातच फेरफटका मारावा म्हणून आम्ही खोलीच्या बाहेर पडलो आणि एकदम मनाची पकड घेणारं आणि नेत्रसुख देणारं असं एक कधी न बघितलेल सौंदर्य आमच्या समोर उभ ठाकलं! निळ्या निळ्या आकाशाला भिडणारे उंच उंच पर्वत, त्यांच्या खाली पर्वताची दुसरी रांग उंच जाणार्या पर्वताच्या मागे धावते आहे की काय असा भास होत होता. तिसरी एक रांग पांढर्या शुभ्र धुक्यांची होती.
आकाशाचा निळाशार पर्वचांचा हिरवागार, तर धुक्यांचा पांढराशुभ्र रंग, तीनरंगी रंगानं रंगलेलं हे विश्व पाहून मी हरकून गेले. द्विढ़मुढ होऊन जागच्या जागीच उभी राहिले. तो काय? अरुणाची आभा फाकून हळूहळू त्याचा मंदमंद लालसर पिवळसर प्रकाश दृष्टिवर पडला आणि वाटू लागलं धुक्याची लाट आता आपल्याकडे धाव घेत आहे. आपण आता धुक्यांत सापडू, आपल्याला काही दिसणार नाही, अशी शंका आली पण तस काही झालं नाही. चांदी वितळल्याप्रमाणे धुकं हळूहळू वितळू लागलं आणि वेगळ्याच सौंदर्याचा साक्षात्कार झाला.
