केट मॉन्स्टर : ''इंटरनेट खरंच मस्त आहे.'' (The internet is really, really great)
ट्रेकी मॉन्स्टर : ''पॉर्नसाठी'' (For porn!)
केट मॉन्स्टर : ''मला वेगवान कनेक्शन मिळालं, म्हणून थांबावं लागलं नाही'' (I got a fast connection so I didn't have to wait.")
ट्रेकी मॉन्स्टर : ''पॉर्नसाठी'' ("For porn!)
सरळसाधा किंगरगार्डन शिक्षक असणारा केट मॉन्स्टर इंटरनेटवरून कशी खरेदी करता येते, वाढदिवसाच्या शुभेच्छा देता येतात, हे सांगत इंटरनेटचे उपयोग सांगतोय.
पण त्याच्या बेरकी शेजाऱ्याचं - ट्रेकी मॉन्स्टरचं मात्र असं ठाम मत आहे की लोकं इंटरनेट जास्त इतर गोष्टींसाठी वापरतात.
त्याचं खरं आहे का? काही प्रमाणात...पण पूर्णपणे नाही.
विश्वसनीय वाटावी अशी एक आकडेवारी सांगते की इंटरनेटवर करण्यात येणाऱ्या 7 सर्चपैकी 1 वेब सर्च हा पोर्नोग्राफीसाठी असतो. याचाच अर्थ असाही होऊ शकतो की 7 पैकी 6 वेळा इतर गोष्टी इंटरनेटवर शोधल्या जातात.
पॉर्नचं मार्केट
पॉर्नहब ही सगळ्यांत जास्त पाहिली जाणारी पॉर्न वेबसाईट आहे. ही वेबसाईट नेटफ्लिक्स किंवा लिंक्डइन इतकीच लोकप्रिय आहे. यावरून ती खूपच लोकप्रिय असल्याचं वाटेल पण मी तपासून पाहिलं तेव्हा जगभरातल्या वेबसाईट्समध्ये या वेबसाईटचा क्रमांक 28वा होता.
पण ऍव्हेन्यू क्यूला 2003मध्ये जेव्हा सुरुवात झाली, तेव्हा कदाचित ट्रेकी मॉन्स्टरचं म्हणणं तात्कालिक परिस्थितीनुसार बरोबर असेल.
नवीन टेक्नॉलॉजी ही नेहमीच महाग आणि बेभरवशाची असते. ती लवकर स्वीकारणाऱ्या लोकांना त्यांना शोधावं लागतं. आणि मग या लोकांच्या मदतीने टेक्नॉलॉजीचा विकास होतो.
एकदा का टेक्नॉलॉजी स्वस्त आणि विश्वासार्ह झाली की तिला मोठी बाजारपेठ मिळते आणि तिचा वापर वेगवेगळ्या पद्धतीने होते.
असं म्हटलं जातं की इंटरनेट आणि इतर टेक्नॉलॉजीच्या विकासामध्ये पॉर्नोग्राफीने हीच भूमिका बजावली. मी काय म्हणतोय याचा अर्थ लागतोय का?

इंटरनेटच्या विकासामध्ये पॉर्नची भूमिका
कलाविष्कारांना सुरुवात झाली अगदी तेव्हापासून सेक्स हा त्यासाठीचा विषय होता. प्रागैतिहासिक काळात लेण्यांमध्ये चित्र काढणाऱ्यांनी वक्ष, नितंब, योनीची चित्रं काढलेली आहेत.
संभोग करणाऱ्या जोडप्यांची चित्रं ज्युदेआमधल्या गुराख्यांनी किमान 11,000 वर्षांपूर्वी कोरून ठेवलेली आहेत.
साधारण 4000 वर्षांपूर्वी मेसोपोटेमियामधल्या एका आर्टिस्टने एका टेराकोटा लादीवर एक चित्र कोरलेलं आहे. यात स्त्री-पुरुष संभोग करत असताना ती स्त्री स्ट्रॉने बिअर पीत आहे.
काही हजार वर्षांनंतर उत्तर पेरूमधील मोशेने सिरॅमिकच्या माध्यमातून संभोगाचं चित्रण केलं. भारतीय कामसूत्रही याच कालावधीतील आहे.
पण लोकांनी कलेच्या माध्यमातून इरॉटिक साहित्य मांडलं याचा अर्थ यामुळेच या कलांचा विकास झाला, असा होत नाही. असा विचार करण्याचं काही कारणही नाही.
आता गटेनबर्गच्या छापखान्याचंच पाहा. नक्कीच तिथे भावना चाळवणारी पुस्तकं छापण्यात आली. पण मुख्य बाजारपेठ ही धार्मिक पुस्तकांसाठीची होती.
19व्या शतकामध्ये यासाठीचं माध्यम होतं - फोटोग्राफी.
पॅरीसमधील स्टुडिओजनी या तथाकथित 'कलाभ्यासातून' बक्कळ पैसा कमावला, पण तिथल्या लोकांनी हे कधी मान्य केलं नाही.
या टेक्नॉलॉजीसाठी भरपूर पैसे देण्याची ग्राहकांची तयारी होती. त्याकाळी वेश्येकडे जाण्यासाठी जितके पैसे लागत त्यापेक्षा जास्त पैसे एक उत्तेजक फोटो विकत घेण्यासाठी लागत होते.
पॉर्नोग्राफी हा शब्द लेखन (writing) आणि वेश्या (prostitutes) यासाठीच्या ग्रीक शब्दांवरून आला आहे.
कलात्मक अभिव्यक्तीसाठीची नवीन टेक्नॉलॉजी - सिनेमा, येईपर्यंत या शब्दाला एक वेगळा, आधुनिक अर्थ मिळालेला होता.
पण पॉर्नोग्राफी हे फिल्म इंडस्ट्री चालण्यामागचं कारण अर्थातच नव्हतं.
फिल्म्स महागड्या होत्या. तुम्ही घातलेला पैसा भरून काढण्यासाठी मोठा प्रेक्षक मिळणं गरजेचं होतं. म्हणजे अर्थातच सार्वजनिकरीत्या बघणं आलंच.
घरामध्ये खासगीमध्ये पॉर्नोग्राफी पाहण्यासाठी लोकं पैसे देत होते. पण सार्वजनिक सिनेमागृहामध्ये ऍडल्ट सिनेमा पाहणारे फार कमी जण होते.
1960च्या दशकामध्ये यासाठीचा एक पर्याय आला - पीपशो बूथ. एक बंदिस्त खोली जिथे स्लॉटमध्ये पैसे टाकून फिल्म पाहता यायची.
एका बूथमधून दर आठवड्याला काही हजार डॉलर्सची उलाढाल होत होती.
पण प्रायव्हसीच्या बाबतीत खरा बदल घडला व्हिडिओ कॅसेट रेकॉर्डर (VCR) आल्यानंतर.

द इरॉटिक इंजिन या पुस्तकात लेखक पॅचन बार्स यांनी असा दावा केलाय की व्हीसीआरमुळे पॉर्नोग्राफीला स्वतःची एक अर्थव्यवस्था आणि तंत्रज्ञानाचं पाठबळ मिळालं.
सुरुवातीला व्हीसीआर विकणं कठीण होतं. ते महाग होते आणि ते दोन फॉरमॅटमध्ये मिळायचे - व्हीएचएस आणि बीटामॅक्स.
जी वस्तू लवकरच कालबाह्य होण्याची शक्यता आहे, त्यामध्ये इतका पैसा घालण्याचा धोका कोण पत्करणार? तर असे लोक, ज्यांना खरंच घरी अडल्ट फिल्म पहायच्या होत्या.
1970च्या दशकामध्ये विकल्या जाणाऱ्या बहुतेक व्हिडिओ टेप्स या पॉर्नोग्राफिक होत्या.
ज्यांना कौंटुंबिक चित्रपट पहायचे होते त्यांच्यासाठीही काही वर्षांतच ही टेक्नॉलॉजी परवडण्याजोगी झाली. आणि बाजारपेठ जशी वाढली तसा त्यातला पॉर्नोग्राफीचा टक्का घसरला.
केबल टीव्हीच्या बाबतीत हेच घडलं. आणि हो, इंटरनेटच्या बाबतीतही.
हा लेख वाचणाऱ्या वयाने थोड्या मोठ्या वाचकांना आठवत असेल की ऑनलाईन होण्यासाठी डायल-अप मोडेम वापरून कनेक्शन जोडावं लागे. मग ते हळूहळू चालत असताना फोनचं बिल किती येणार याची चिंता करण्यात वेळ जाई. आज ज्या फाईल्स चुटकीसरशी डाऊनलोड होतात त्यासाठी तेव्हा तासंतास लागत.
मग सामान्य माणसाला टिकवून ठेवणारं यात काय होतं? बरोबर ओळखलंत.
पॉर्नोग्राफी पाहाणाऱ्यांमुळे काय झालं?
1990च्या दशकातल्या युजनेट डिस्कशन ग्रुपच्या पाहणीनुसार इथे शेअर करण्यात येणाऱ्या 6 पैकी 5 फोटो, हे पॉर्नोग्राफिक होते.
काही वर्षांनंतर इंटरनेटवरच्या चॅटरुम्स विषयीची पाहणी करण्यात आली. त्यातही हेच प्रमाण आढळलं.
म्हणजे त्या काळासाठी, ट्रेकी मॉन्स्टरचं म्हणणं योग्य होतं.

यामुळे बाकीच्या बाबतीतही प्रगती झाली. अनेक वेब टेक्नॉलॉजीचा शोध हा ऑनलाईन पॉर्नोग्राफी पुरवणाऱ्यांनी लावला. उदाहरणार्थ फाईल कॉम्प्रेस करणं (फाईलची साईझ कमी करणं) आणि वापरण्यासाठी सोप्या अशा पैसे भरायच्या पद्धती. शिवाय संलग्न मार्केटिंगसारखी बिझनेस मॉडेल्सही याच लोकांनी आणली.
पण आता प्रोफेशनल पॉर्नोग्राफर्सचं आयुष्य इंटरनेटने कठीण करून ठेवलंय.
ऑनलाईन सगळ्या गोष्टी मोफत उपलब्ध असताना ज्याप्रकारे वर्तमानपत्राची नोंदणी योजना विकणं किंवा म्युझिक व्हिडिओ विकणं जसं कठीण आहे तसंच पोर्नहबसारख्या साईट्स मोफत असताना पोर्नोग्राफी विकणं कठीण झालंय.
यापैकी बहुतेक पॉर्नोग्राफी ही पायरेटेड असते आणि अशाप्रकारे बेकायदेशीररीत्या टाकण्यात आलेला मजकूर काढून टाकणं अतिशय कठीण असल्याचं जॉन रॉन्सन त्यांच्या द बटरफ्लाय इफेक्ट या पॉडकास्ट सीरिजमध्ये म्हणतात.
'कस्टम' पॉर्नोग्राफी
यातही आता एक नवीन शाखा उदयाला येतेय ती आहे - 'कस्टम' पॉर्नोग्राफी. जिथे लोक स्वतः स्क्रिप्ट लिहून त्यावर फिल्म तयार करून घेतात.
पण अर्थातच मजकूर तयार करणाऱ्यांसाठी - कन्टेन्ट क्रिएटर्ससाठी जी गोष्ट वाईट असते, तीच गोष्ट सगळीकडच्या गोष्टी एकत्र आणणाऱ्या ऍग्रीगेटर प्लॅटफॉर्म्ससाठी चांगली ठरते. जाहिराती आणि प्रिमियम सबस्क्रिप्शन्सच्या माध्यमातून त्यांना पैसा मिळतो.
आताच्या घडीला माईंडगीक नावाची कंपनी पॉर्नोग्राफीच्या क्षेत्रात सगळ्यांत मोठी आहे. पॉर्नहब आणि आघाडीच्या इतर अनेक अडल्ट साइट्स या माईंडगीकच्या मालकीच्या आहेत.
सगळ्या बाजारपेठेवर त्यांचं असलेलं वर्चस्व ही मोठी अडचण असल्याचं व्हॅनकोव्हर स्कूल ऑफ इकॉनॉमिक्सच्या प्रो. मरीना ऍडशेड यांचं म्हणणं आहे. डॉलर्स ऍण्ड सेक्स : हाऊ इकॉनॉमिक्स इन्फ्लुएनसेस सेक्स अॅंड लव्ह नावाचं पुस्तक त्यांनी लिहिलं आहे.
''एकच खरेदीदार असल्याने फिल्मच्या किंमती कमी करण्याचं दडपण प्रोड्युसर्सवर येत आहे'' त्या सांगतात.
''यामुळे पॉर्नोग्राफीतला फक्त नफाच कमी झाला असं नाही, तर यामुळे पॉर्न अॅक्टर्सवरही दडपणं येतंय. यापूर्वी जे काम त्यांना नाकारता यायचं, ते आता त्यांना करावं लागतं, ते ही कमी पैशांत. ''
ऍव्हेन्यू क्यू मधला ट्रेकी मॉन्स्टर दिवसभर इतर काहीही न करता पोर्नोग्राफी सर्फिंग करत असतो. म्हणूनच आपण अब्जाधीश असल्याचं जेव्हा तो इतर पात्रांना सांगतो तेव्हा सगळे आश्चर्यचकित होतात.
''उलथापालथ होणाऱ्या बाजारपेठेत सगळ्यांत सुरक्षित गुंतवणूक म्हणजे...पोर्न!'' तो सांगतो.
पुन्हा एकदा ट्रेकी मॉन्स्टरचं बरोबर आहे, पण पूर्णपणे नाही.
पोर्नोग्राफीमध्ये पैसा आहे हे नक्की.
पण यातून पैसा मिळवण्याचा सर्वोत्तम मार्ग म्हणजे त्यासाठी तंत्रज्ञान पुरवणाऱ्या कंपन्यांमध्ये गुंतवणूक करणं.
काही काळापूर्वी याचा अर्थ होता पॅरिसमधील फोटो स्टुडिओ किंवा व्हीसीआर बनवणाऱ्या कंपन्या किंवा हायस्पीड मोडेमच्या कंपन्यांमध्ये गुंतवणूक करणं.
आज याचं उत्तर आहे लोकांना खिळवून ठेवणारी माईंडगीक कंपनी.
मग ट्रेकी मॉन्स्टर भविष्यात काय गाईल? बहुतेक ''रोबोज पोर्नसाठी आहेत''
टेक्नॉलॉजीची झपाट्याने प्रगती करण्यातली सेक्सची भूमिका संपलेली आहे, असं आतातरी वाटत नाही.
