इंडोनेशियामधील एका गुहेतील भिंतीवर आढळलेल्या चित्राची सध्या जगभरात चर्चा सुरू आहे. हे चित्र तब्बल 44 हजार वर्षं जुनं असल्याचं सांगितलं जात आहे.
या चित्रात प्राण्यांचे काही अवयव असणारे मानवासारखे दिसणारे सजीव हातात भाले आणि दोर घेऊन म्हशीची शिकार करताना दाखवलं आहे.
दगडावर चितारलेली ही जगाती सर्वांत जुनी कथा असल्याचं संशोधकांना वाटतं.
ऑस्ट्रेलियातील ग्रिफीट युनिवर्सिटी ऑफ ब्रिस्बेनमधील पुरातत्वशास्त्रज्ञांनी Nature या विज्ञानविषयक नियतकालिकात आपले निष्कर्ष मांडले आहेत.
ग्रिफीटमधले पुरातत्त्वशास्त्रज्ञ अॅडम ब्रूम दोन वर्षांपूर्वी इंडोनेशियाला गेले असताना आपल्या एका सहकाऱ्यासोबत एका गुहेत गेले. गुहेत जाण्याच्या मार्गात झाड होतं. त्यांच्या सहकाऱ्याने जेव्हा ते झाडं हलवलं तेव्हा त्यांना हे चित्र दिसलं.
ब्रूम म्हणाले, "माझ्या आयफोनवर मला हे चित्र दिसलं आणि मी मोठ्याने किंचाळलो."

जगातील सर्वांत जुन्या चित्रकलांमध्ये इंडोनेशियातील चित्रकलेचा समावेश होत नाही. मानवी इतिहासातील सर्वांत जुनी चित्र दक्षिण अफ्रिकेतील दगडांवर सापडल्याचा दावा गेल्यावर्षी शास्त्रज्ञांनी केला होता. ती चित्रं 73 हजार वर्ष जुनी असल्याचं शास्त्रज्ञांचं म्हणणं आहे.
या चित्रातून काय दिसतं?
इंडोनेशियातील बोरेनो शहराच्या पूर्व भागाला असलेल्या सुलावेसी बेटावर असलेल्या लिअँग बुलुसिपाँग 4 या गुहेत हे चित्र आढळलं आहे.
जवळपास पाच मीटर लांब भिंतीवर हे चित्र काढलेलं आहे. यात म्हशीसारखा दिसणारा प्राणी आहे. शिवाय सुलावेसीमध्ये आढळणारी डुकरंही या चित्रात चितारण्यात आली आहेत.
त्यांच्याशेजारी काही लहान आकृत्या आहेत. त्या मानवासारख्या दिसतात. मात्र, त्यांना प्राण्यांसारखी शेपटी आहे. त्यांचं नाकही प्राण्यांसारखं आहे.
चित्रातील एका भागात हातात भाले घेतलेल्या मनुष्यासारख्या दिसणाऱ्या प्राण्यांनी म्हशीला वेढा घातल्याचं दाखवलं आहे.
ब्रूम म्हणतात, "मी असं यापूर्वी कधीही बघितलेलं नव्हतं. म्हणजे या भागात दगडावर कोरलेल्या शेकडो कलाकृती आम्ही बघितल्या आहेत. मात्र, एखाद्या प्राण्याच्या शिकारीचं दृश्य बघितलेलं नव्हतं."
मात्र, पाच मीटर लांब असलेल्या या चित्रात एक संपूर्ण कथा सांगितली आहे का, याविषयी तज्ज्ञ साशंक आहेत. त्यांच्या मते हे एकाच भिंतीवर वेगवेगवळ्या वेळी चितारलेली वेगवेगळी चित्रं असू शकतात. कदाचित हा एक संबंध प्रसंग नसेलही.
दरहम विद्यापीठातील पुरातत्वशास्त्रज्ञ आणि दगडांवरील कलाकृतीचे विशेषज्ज्ञ असलेले पॉल पेटीट यांनी Nature या नियतकालिकाला दिलेल्या प्रतिक्रियेत म्हटलं आहे, "ही एक संपूर्ण दृश्यं आहे का, हे ठामपणे सांगता येत नाही."
चित्र 44,000 वर्ष जुनं आहे का?
शास्त्रज्ञांच्या पथकाने चित्र ज्या खनिजापासून तयार करण्यात आलं आहे त्या कॅलसाईटचं विश्लेषण केलं.
खनिजातील रेडियोअॅक्टिव्ह युरेनियम हळूहळू थोरियममध्ये परिवर्तीत होतो. पथकाने या इलेमेंट्सच्या वेगवेगळ्या आयसोटोप्सची पातळी मोजली.
या परिक्षणात त्यांना आढळलं की डुकराच्या चित्रावर किमान 43,900 वर्षांपूर्वी कॅलसाईट तयार व्हायला सुरुवात झाली. तर दोन म्हशींवरचे थर जवळपास 40,900 वर्षांपूर्वी तयार व्हायला सुरुवात झाली.
एकट्या सुलावेसी बेटावर प्राचीन चित्र असलेल्या जवळपास 242 गुहा आहेत. दरवर्षी यात भर पडत असते.
इतर प्रागैतिहासिक कलांशी याची तुलना कशी करता येईल?
हे सर्वांत जुनं चित्र नसलं तरी यात दाखवलेली कथा मात्र सर्वात जुनी असू शकते, असं संशोधकांचं म्हणणं आहे.
"पूर्वी युरोपमध्ये दगडांवर चितारलेल्या जवळपास 14,000 ते 21,000 वर्षं जुन्या कथा आढळल्या होत्या. युरोपातील दगडांवर चितारलेली ही दृश्यं जगातील सर्वांत जुन्या आर्टवर्क असल्याचं मानलं जात होतं", असं Nature नियतकालिकात सादर करण्यात आलेल्या कागदपत्रांत म्हटलं आहे.
सुलावेसीमध्ये आढलेलं हे चित्रदेखील आतापर्यंत सापडलेली प्राण्यांची सर्वात जुनी रेखाचित्रं असू शकतात.
गेल्यावर्षी बोर्नियोमधील एका गुहेत प्राण्याचं पेन्टिंग सापडलं होतं. प्राण्याचं ते सर्वात जुनं पेन्टिंग असल्याचं मानलं जात होतं. ते चित्र तब्बल 40,000 वर्षं जुनं होतं.
