वक्रतुंण्डावतारश्च देहांना ब्रम्हाधारक:।
मत्सरासुराहंता स सिंहवाहनग: स्मृत:।।
वरदान प्राप्त झाल्यानंतर मत्सरासुराने पृथ्वी, पाताळ आणि स्वर्ग लोकांवर आक्रमण केले. यामध्ये वरूण, कुबेर आणि यम देवांचा पराभव झाला आणि मत्सरासुर स्वर्गाधिपती झाला. मत्सरासुराच्या अत्याचाराला कंटाळून ब्रह्मा, विष्णू आदी देव कैलासपती भगवान शंकराकडे गेले आणि मत्सरासुराच्या अत्याचाराचा वृतांत सांगितला तेव्हा शंकराने त्याचा बीमोड करण्याचे आश्वासन दिले.

सुंदरप्रिय आणि विषयप्रिय यांनी समरभूमीवर पार्वती वल्लभला मूर्च्छित केले. तेव्हा वक्रतुंडाच्या गणांनी या दोघांनाही मारून टाकले. ते पाहून मत्सरासुर रणांगणात आला. वक्रतुंडाने त्याला शरण येण्याचे सांगितले अन्यथा तुझाही जीव घेतला जाईल असे सांगितले. वक्रतुंडाचे भयानक रूप पाहून मत्सरासुराला थरकाप सुटला आणि त्याने वक्रतुंडाची स्तुती करण्यास सुरवात केली. या भक्तीवर प्रसन्न होवून वक्रतुंडाने त्याला आपला भक्त मानले. प्रभुकृपा प्राप्त मत्सरासुराने निश्चिंत होऊन सुख अनुभवले. इकडे देवतांनीसुद्धा आनंद साजरा करत वक्रतुंडाची स्तुती केली.

आणखी एक कथा
गणेशाला संतुष्ट करण्यासाठी लोकपितामहाने षडक्षरी (वक्रतुंण्डाय हुम्) मंत्राचा जप करत कठोर तपश्चर्या सुरू केली. त्यांची तपश्चर्या पाहून वक्रतुंड प्रकट झाले आणि विधात्याला वर दिला. त्यानंतर ते सृष्टी कार्यात मग्न झाले. त्यातूनच दंभासुराचा जन्म झाला. त्याने कठोर तपस्या केली. पदमयोनीने संतुष्ट होऊन त्याला निर्भयतेचे वरदान दिले. तेव्हा दंभाने स्वत: साठी एक सुंदर नगर तयार केले आणि तिथेच राहू लागला. दैत्यगुरू शुक्राचार्यांनी त्याला दैत्याधिपती या पदावर नियुक्त करून त्याचा अभिषेक केला.दंभासुराने आपल्या पराक्राच्या जोरावर पृथ्वी, स्वर्ग, वैकुंठ आणि कैलासावर आक्रमण करून आपले अधिराज्य स्थापित केले. निराधार देवतांनी अत्यंत चिंतीत आणि दु:खी मनाने विधात्याची आराधना केली. तेव्हा वक्रतुंड प्रकट झाले. देवतांनी दंभासुराच्या अत्याचारापासून वाचविण्याची विनंती वक्रतुंडाला केली. त्यांनी दंभासुराला पराभूत करण्याचे आश्वासन दिले.
'तु प्रभुच्या आज्ञेचा स्वीकार कर आणि देवतांना मुक्त कर, अन्यथा तुझा सर्वनाश निश्चित आहे' असा संदेश घेवून सुरेंद्राला दूताच्या रूपात दंभासुराकडे पाठविले. परंतु दंभासुराने सुरेंद्राचा संदेश ऐकून 'मी तुमचा अहंकार दूर करेल' असे उलट उत्तर दिले आणि कोण गणेश? हे जाणून घेण्यासाठी तो शुक्रचार्यांकडे गेला. शुक्राचार्यांनी त्याला गणेश रूपाचा यथार्थ परिचय करून दिला. गणेशाच्या अभूतपूर्व दिव्य रूपाची माहिती जाणून घेतल्यावर त्याने वक्रतुंडाला शरण जाण्याचे ठरविले.
मात्र असुर त्याला विरोध करू लागले आणि दैत्यपती दंभासुराने नगराच्या बाहेर वक्रतुंडाचे चरण स्पर्श करून क्षमायाचना केली. गणेशाने त्याला क्षमा करून त्याला आपला भक्त मानले.
