(फिलिपिनो स्त्रिया खरंच सुंदर दिसतात... सोबत अमोरसोलोची पेंटिंग्ज जोडली आहेत.) या मिश्र विवाहातून उत्तपन्न झालेल्या संततीला स्पॅनिश किंवा अमेरिकन पासपोर्ट ही मिळाले. लोकसंख्येत भरमसाढ वाढ आणि रोजगाराच्या संधींची चणचण ही इथल्या जनतेच्या विस्थापनाची प्रमुख कारणे. फिलिपिनो लोक मुख्यत: सेवाक्षेत्रात आढळतात. घरगडी, स्वयंपाकी, पाळणाघर, चालक अशी कामे करण्यात त्यांना कमीपणा वाटत नाही. या विस्थापित लोकांनी परदेशातून पाठवलेले पैसे हा इथे वास्तव्यास असणार्या अनेकांचा उत्पन्नाचा प्रमुख मार्ग आहे. केरळ, उत्तरप्रदेश, कोकणमध्ये सापडते तशीच 'मनीऑर्डर इकॉनॉमी'.
एकतर बँक तर परदेशातून पाठवलेले पैसे दीड मिनिटात तुमच्या खात्यामध्ये जमा होईल अन्यथा सेवाशुल्क आकारले जाणार नाही अशी गवाही देते. भल्याभल्या पिझ्झा, बर्गर डिलीव्हरी एक्सपर्टना तोंडात बोट घालायला लावेल असा हा वेग आहे.
भारतीय डॉक्टर्स जगभर मान्यता पावले आहेत पण आपण मात्र शिक्षण घेऊन परिचारिकेपेक्षा काही विशेष बनण्याचा का प्रयत्न करत नाही? असा प्रश्न एका लेखकाने केला.

भारतीय डॉक्टर्स जगभर मान्यता पावले आहेत पण आपण मात्र शिक्षण घेऊन परिचारिकेपेक्षा काही विशेष बनण्याचा का प्रयत्न करत नाही? असा प्रश्न एका लेखकाने केला.
हा देश हिरवागार, नैसर्गिक साधनसामुग्रीने भरपूर आणि नजर लागण्याइतका सुंदर आहे. एकेकाळी प्रचंड प्रमाणात असणारे सोने, स्पेनने पळवून नेले आहे. मेक्सिको आणि इतर लॅटिन अमेरिकन देशातून 'अॅझटेक' लोकांचे सोने पळवून नेले तशीच ही पण कथा भारतामध्ये ब्रिटिशांनी केले तसेच शोषण. या सगळ्या जेच्यांनी वसाहतींचा झळाळता इतिहास पुसून टाकण्याचा पुरेसा प्रयत्न केला. इथे ते मोठ्या प्रमाणावर यशस्वी झाले. पिनॉय फार आक्रमक नव्हते आणि बदलण्यासाठी तयार होते.
मागच्या एका डायरीत मी अयाला संग्रहायातील सुवर्ण संग्रहाबाद्दल लिहिले होते. तिथे एका सुवर्ण पत्रावर पुरातन पिनॉय लिपीमधील लिखाण पाहण्यात आले. म्हणजे स्वत:ची लिपी असण्या इतके हे लोक प्रगत होते. पण आता पाहिले तर स्पॅनिशपूर्व इतिहासाचा उल्लेखही कुठे आढळत नाही. इथला इतिहास स्पॅनिश लोकांच्या आगमनानंतर चालू होतो.
मनिलामध्ये एक ऐतिहासिक स्मारक आहे.... इंट्राम्युरोस. स्पॅनिश लोकांनी उभारलेला जुना किल्ला. सिटी गाईडमध्ये प्रवाशांसाठी आकर्षण म्हणून याचा उल्लेख होता. इंट्राम्युरोस एक भुईकोट किल्ला आहे. पुण्याचा शनिवार वाडा किंवा बर्हाणपूर, सोलापूरच्या भुईकोट किल्ल्यांची आठवण करून देणारा. तटबंदीच्या आता बरीचशी सरकारी कार्यालये, दोन चर्च, यातलं एक चर्च युनेस्कोची 'वर्ल्ड हेरिटेज साईट' आहे, दोन संग्रहालये आहते. फोर्ट सँटियागो नावाचा छोटेखानी किल्ला एका बाजूला आहे. इंट्राम्युरोसमध्ये काही इमारती जुन्या स्पॅनिश पद्धतीने उभारल्या आहेत. पर्यटकांना फिरवण्यासाठी साहेबी थाटाचे टांगे आहेत. सरंक्षक तटबंदी पंधरावीस फूट उंचीची आहे. एका भागात जुन्या तोफा ठेवल्या आहेत. एका छोट्या व्हरांड्यात जुनी पिस्तुले, घंटा, शिरस्त्राणष यांचा संग्रह मांडून ठेवला आहे. इंट्राम्युरोसच्या एका बाजूने 'पासिग' नदी वाहते तर दुसर्या दोन बाजूनी हिरवेगार गोल्फ मैदान आहे.
फोर्ट सँटियागोमध्ये होजे रिझाल चे स्मारक आहे. (Jose चा उच्चार स्पॅनिश मध्ये 'होजे' असा करतात) रिझाल हा फिलिपाईन्सचा राष्ट्रीय हिरो. पेशाने डॉक्टर असणार्या रिझालने स्पॅनिश सत्तेविरूद्ध बंड पेटवले. सत्ताधार्यांनी याच फोर्ट सँटियागोमध्ये त्याला स्थानबद्ध केले आणि काही काळाने ठार केले.
किल्ला म्हटल्यावर माझ्या मराठी मनात उभ्या राहिलेल्या प्रतिमेच्या मानाने हा फोर्ट तर अगदीच फुसका होता. ऐतिहासिक वास्तूच्या सरंक्षणाचे प्रयत्न, तिथले सौंदर्यीकरण, ध्वनी प्रकाश खेळ, माहिती फलक, स्मृतीचिन्ह विक्रीची दुकाने आणि या सर्वातून स्थानिक लोकांना मिळत असलेले उत्पन्न, हे सर्व आवडण्यासारखे होते.
इंट्राम्युरोसचे व्यवस्थापन फिलिपाईन्सचे सरकार करते. अर्थात लोकांचा सहभाग हवाच. एक छोटी गोष्ट सांगतो. एवढे टांगे या भागात फिरत होते पण कुठेही घोड्याची लीद पडलेली आढळली नाही. लीद जमा करणार्या पिशव्या सर्व घोड्यांना बांधलेल्या होत्या. मनिलाला येण्याचा आधी आम्ही माथेरानला गेलो होतो. जंगल छान आहे यात शंकाच नाही पण सगळ्या गावभरचे रस्ते लिदीने भरलेले. तो वास आसमंतात पसरलेला. पिशवी लावण्यासारखी छोटी गोष्ट, कुठल्याही सरकारी मदतीशिवाय, अध्यादेशाविना करता येण्यासारखे काम... फक्त आपला गाव स्वच्छ ठेवण्याची इच्छाशक्ती हवी.
.... तो लेख वाचला तेव्हा मनाशीच हसू आले. कारण माहिती तंत्रज्ञान क्षेत्रात आपल्या आज्ञांचे निमूटपणे पालन करणारा 'सर्व्हर' हाच खरा राजा असतो....
