सूर्याचं चित्र काढायचं असेल तर आपण हमखास पिवळा रंग हातात घेतो. त्यात नारंगी आणि लाल रंग सुद्धा वापरतो. परंतु आपल्या सूर्यमालेच्या मध्यभागी असलेला हा तारा खरं तर पिवळा नाही, ना तो नारंगी किंवा लाल रंगाचा आहे.
हे सर्व रंग मिळून आणखी काही रंग आहेत. सूर्य निरंतर रंगांमध्ये प्रकाश उत्सर्जित करतो.
तुम्ही जर प्रिझमच्या माध्यमातून (लोलक) सूर्यप्रकाश पाहिला तर तो लाल, नारंगी, पिवळा, हिरवा, नीळा, आणि जांभळ्या रंगाचा आहे, हे तुमच्या लक्षात येईल.
इंद्रधनुष्याप्रमाणे हे रंग डोळ्यांना दिसतात. खरं तर इंद्रधनुष्य म्हणजे सूर्यप्रकाश जेव्हा वातावरणातील पाण्याच्या थेंबांमधून जातो तेव्हा तो आपल्या डोळ्याला कसा दिसतो ते दृश्य. हे पाण्याचे थेंब छोट्या प्रिझमसारखे कार्य करतात.
बहुरंगी सूर्य हा लख्ख प्रकाशामुळं ऊर्जेनं भरलेला दिसत असला तरी ते, पूर्णत: बरोबर आहे असं म्हणता येणार नाही. कारण सूर्याकडून उत्सर्जित होणाऱ्या सूर्यप्रकाशाचा रंग संमिश्र असतो, मात्र आपल्याला केवळ एक रंग दिसतो.
याविषयी जाणून घ्यायचं असेल तर आकाशात एक संकेत मिळतो. आकाशात असलेले ढग जे सूर्यप्रकाश प्रतिबिंबित करतात ते ना पिवळे आहेत ना इतर कोणत्या रंगाचे आहेत.
ते पांढऱ्या रंगाचे आहेत कारण सूर्य जो प्रकाश उत्सर्जित करतो त्याचा खरा रंग हाच आहे.
पिवळा का दिसतो?
सूर्यमालेतील प्रत्येक रंगाची वेगळी तरंगलांबी (एका लहरीच्या शिखेपासून दुसर्या लहरीच्या शिखेपर्यंतचे अंतर) असते.
एका टोकाला लाल रंग आहे ज्याची तरंगलांबी सर्वाधिक आहे. रंग तरंगलांबीमध्ये कमी होत जातात. लाल ते नारंगी, पिवळा, हिरवा, निळा, इंडिगो, जांभळा या पद्धतीने.
कमी तरंगलांबी असलेल्या रंगाचे प्रकाशकण अधिक तरंगलांबी असलेल्या प्रकाशकणांपेक्षा अधिक विखुरलेले आणि उत्तेजित असतात.

अंतराळात प्रकाश कोणत्याही अडथळ्याविना प्रवास करत असतो त्याठिकाणी प्रकाशकणांना बदलणारं असं काहीही नाही. त्यामुळं सूर्य का एखाद्या पांढल्या चेंडूसारखा असतो. हा या ताऱ्याचा 'खरा रंग' आहे.
मात्र, जेव्हा सूर्यकिरणं पृथ्वीच्या वातावरणाच्या माध्यमातून प्रवास करतात, हवेतील रेणू हे कमी तरंगलांबी असलेल्या प्रकाशकणांमध्ये बदल घडवून आणतात.
अधिक तरंगलांबी असलेल्या स्पेक्ट्रम (लोलकातून बाहेर पडणारे रंग) मधील रंग हे आपल्या डोळ्यापर्यंत अगदी सहजपणे पोहोचू शकतात.
"निळ्या आणि अतिनील भागाशी संबंधीत असेल्या प्रकाशाच्या स्पेक्ट्रमच्या सर्वात ऊर्जावान भागात वातावरामुळं अडथळा निर्माण होतो, अशी माहिती अॅस्ट्रॉनॉमर डायरी नावाची बेवसाईट चालवणाऱ्या एंजर मोलिना यांनी दिली.
"त्यामुळं सूर्य हा पृथ्वीवर शीत रंगाचा न दिसता एखाद्या लाईटच्या बल्बसारखा दिसतो. कारण शीत रंग वातावरणामुळं नष्ट होतात आणि पिवळ्या रंगाकडं झुकणारा असा उष्म रंग त्याला मिळतो."
मात्र, मग लाल किंवा केशरी रंगाची तरंगलांबी अधिक असूनदेखील तो तसा न दिसता पिवळ्या रंगाचाच का दिसतो?
हिरव्यापासून ते जांभळ्या रंगापर्यंतच्या कमी तरंगलांबीचे रंग शोषल्यानंतर सूर्यप्रकाश हा कलर स्पेक्ट्रमच्या मध्यभागी स्थिर होत असतो, अशी माहिती युनिव्हर्सिटी ऑफ द रिपब्लिक इन उरुग्वेमधील खगोलशास्त्राचे प्राध्यापक गोंझालो टँक्रेडी यांनी दिली.
हिरवा सूर्य?
तुम्ही कदाचित काही अशीही संकेतस्थळं किंवा सोशल मीडियावरील पोस्ट पाहिल्या असतील, ज्यात सूर्य प्रत्यक्षात हिरवा असल्याचा दावा करण्यात आलेला आहे.
आपण जर सूर्याच्या स्पेक्ट्रममधील रंगांची मांडणी केली तर सर्वात वरच्या शिखरावर हिरवा भाग असलेल्या रंगाच्या डोंगरासारखी आकृती तयार होते. या वस्तुस्थितातून हा दावा समोर आल्याचं टँक्रेडी सांगतात.
मानवी डोळ्यांनी सूर्यकिरणांच्या रंगामध्ये असलेला फरक जाणवत नाही, मात्र हा फरक पाहता येतील अशी काही उपकरणं उपलब्ध असून, त्यातून बहुतांश वेळा हिरवा रंगच प्रामुख्यानं पाहायला मिळतो.
"मात्र जेव्हा आपण यातून निळ्यासारखे कमी तरंगलांबीचे रंग दूर करतो, त्यावेळी यातील प्रमुख रंग हा हिरव्याऐवजी पिवळा होतो," असं ट्रँकेडी म्हणाले.
"त्यामुळं पृथ्वीवर आल्याला सूर्य पिवळा का दिसतो, हे समजून घेण्यासाठी संबंधित माहिती उपयोगी ठरते."
मावळतीचा लाल रंग?
सूर्य जेव्हा उगवत असतो किंवा मावळत असतो तेव्हा तो क्षितीजापासून सर्वात जवळच्या बिंदूवर असतो. त्यामुळं सूर्यकिरणे मोठ्या प्रमाणात हवामानाच्या रेणूंमधून प्रवास करतात.

त्यामुळं निळ्या छटा असलेल्या रंगामध्ये मोठ्या प्रमाणावर बदल होतात आणि त्यामुळं मोठ्या तरंगलांबीतील लाल आणि केशरी रंगाचं सूर्याच्या प्रतिमेवर प्रभाव पाहायला मिळतो.
विशेष म्हणजे या संपूर्ण क्रियेला एक नावही आहे. त्याला रेलेघ स्कॅटरिंग असं म्हणतात. 19 व्या शतकातील ब्रिटिश भौतिक शास्त्रज्ञ लॉर्ड रेलेघ यांच्या नावावरून हे नाव देण्यात आलं आहे.
सूर्य आकाशामध्ये प्रवास करत असताना, पृथ्वीशी त्याचा कोन सातत्यानं बदलत असतो. त्यामुळं सूर्यास्ताच्या वेळी असलेल्या लाल रंगासह दिवसातील वेगवेगळ्या वेळांनाही सूर्याचा रंग काहीसा बदलतो.
आपल्या सर्वांच्या आकर्षणाचं केंद्र असलेल्या सूर्य या ताऱ्याबद्दल आपल्याला या लेखातून रंजक माहिती मिळाली असेल अशी आम्हाला आशा आहे. मात्र सूर्याकडे कधीही उघड्या डोळ्यांनी पाहू नये, अथवा दुर्बिणीच्या माध्यमातूनही थेट सूर्याकडे पाहू नये. त्यामुळं आपल्या डोळ्यांना गंभीर इजा होऊन अंधत्वासारखे गंभीर परिणाम होऊ शकतात.
