कोरोना व्हायरस : 'एकतर आम्हाला पाणी द्या, नाहीतर आमच्या विहिरीत एखादा विषाणू टाकून द्या'

रात्री साडेतीन वाजता निघायचं ठरवलं होतं, पण निघोस्तोवर साडेचार झालेच. मनाची समजूत घातली की ठीक आहे ना, असा रात्रीबेरात्री उठून प्रवास करणं नॉर्मल थोडीच आहे. मग काही बायकांसाठी रात्री दोनला उठून, किलोमीटरभर पायपीट करून पाणी भरणं कधीपासून नॉर्मल झालं? असे प्रश्न फक्त विचारायचे, त्यांच्या उत्तरांची अपेक्षा ठेवायची नाही.

नाशिकहून बर्डेची वाडी नावाच्या आदिवासी पाड्याला निघालो होतो. इथल्या लोकांसाठी नेहमीची येतो उन्हाळा आणि नेहमीची पाणीटंचाई.

इथल्या आायाबाया दोरी लावून विहिरीत उतरतात, थेंबभर पाण्यासाठी तळ खरवडून काढतात, कधीकधी एखादी आपटतेही. जीवावरचं दुखणं निघतं, बातम्या होतात, आश्वासनं मिळतात आणि ती बाई जगली वाचलीच तर पुढच्या वर्षी पुन्हा दोर कमरेला बांधून विहिरीत उतरायला तयार होते.

पण यंदाची पाणी टंचाई वेगळी आहे, कोरोना व्हायरसच्या जागतिक संकटाने वेढलेली.

कोरोना विषाणूपासून आपला बचाव करायचा असेल तर वारंवार हात धुवा असं सरकार आणि WHO सतत सांगतंय. पण जिथे पिण्यासाठीच पाणी नाही तिथे हात धुण्यासाठी पाणी आणणार कुठून?

भारतात जवळपास 6 कोटी लोकांना तीव्र पाणीटंचाई सहन करावी लागते. आताही भारतातली हजारो गावं पाणीटंचाई आणि कोरोना व्हायरसचं संकट अशा दुहेरी कात्रीत सापडली आहेत.

दिवसागणिक कोरोनाची लागण झालेल्या लोकांची संख्या वाढतेय आणि ग्रामीण भागातही कोरोना पसरताना दिसतोय.

आता ही बातमी लिहीत असताना नाशिक जिल्ह्यातल्याच सुरगाणा या आदिवासी तालुक्यात कोरोनाचा एक रुग्ण आढळला आहे.

सुरगाण्यातल्या आदिवासी पाड्यांची परिस्थिती त्र्यंबकेश्वर तालुक्यातल्या बर्डेची वाडीपेक्षा वेगळी नाही. पण तरीही इथल्या लोकांना सतत हात धुणं परवडणारं नाही.

आम्ही पोहचलो तोवर हलकं उजाडलं होतं, गावातल्या महिला डोक्यावर पाण्याचे हंडे ठेवून टेकडीचा चढ चढताना दिसल्या.

ही त्यांची तिसरी किंवा चौथी खेप असावी. त्यातल्या काहींशी बोलायचा प्रयत्न केला, पण त्यांचा दिवस नुकताच सुरू झाला होता आणि कामाचा डोंगर त्यांना उपसायचा होता.

त्या नादात त्यांची पावलं पटापट पडत होती. आमच्या तोंडाला मास्क, त्यात सततच चढ, आणि कामाच्या लगबगीने वाढलेला या बायकांचा स्पीड, आम्हाला 15 मिनिटात दम लागला.

त्यातलीच एक सुरेखा पारधी. डोक्यावर तीन हंड्यांची चळत ठेवून भराभर पाय उचलत होती.

तिला विचारलं कोरोनाविषयी माहितेय का, तर हो म्हणाली. "टीव्हीवर पाहिलं आहे, गावात ग्रामपंचायतीची माणसं माहिती पण देऊन गेली."

त्याच्यापासून बचाव कसा करायचा माहितेय का विचारल्यावर तिने छापील उत्तर घडाघडा म्हणून दाखवली. मग हळूच विचारलं, "तू धुतेस का हात?" तर उसळून उत्तरली... "आम्हाला शक्य नाही. आम्हाला पिण्यासाठीच पाणी नाही. रात्री दोनला, तीनला जाऊन पाणी भरावं लागतं. आम्हाला प्यायला, आंघोळीलाच पाणी मिळत नाही तर हात धुवायला कुठून मिळणार?"

शहरी मनाला प्रश्न पडू शकतो, की विहीर तुमच्या गावाची आहे, मग इतक्या लवकर जाऊन पाणी कशाला भरायचं. तेही सुखाची झोप सोडून. जावे त्यांच्या वंशा तेव्हा कळे.

एकतर गावात एकच टँकर येतो 4000 लीटरचा आणि ते पाणी विहिरीत सोडलं जातं. गावाची लोकसंख्या 650 म्हणजे माणशी फक्त 6 लीटर पाणी 24 तासांसाठी मिळतं.

त्यात अनेकदा पाणी गढूळ असतं, त्यात कचरा असतो, त्यामुळे रात्रभर पाणी सेट झालं, कचरा तळाला गेला की वरवरचं त्यातल्या त्यात स्वच्छ पाणी भरण्यासाठी बायकांची चढाओढ लागते.

परत जितक्या लवकर तुम्ही विहिरीवर येणार तितकं जास्त पाणी तुम्हाला मिळणार असा हिशोब असतोच.

गावात फिरलं की कोरोना व्हायरसची भीती स्पष्ट दिसते. नाशिक, सिन्नर, विल्होळी इथल्या कंपन्यांमध्ये अकुशल कामगार म्हणून काम करणारे किंवा शेतात मजूरी करणारे अनेक जण गावात परत आलेत.

हाताला काम नाही, खिशात पैसा नाही, आणि हे सगळं कोरोनामुळे झालंय त्यामुळे तो काहीतरी भयानक असणार याची त्यांना कल्पना आहे. पण त्यापासून बचावाची काही साधनं नाहीत.

पाणी दुर्मिळ असलेल्या या भागात साबणही चैनच आहे. हात धुणं, भांडी घासणं यासाठी अजूनही मुख्यत्वेकरून राखच वापरली जाते. पाणी भरायला विहीरीवर ही गर्दी जमते. इथल्या महिलांना सोशल डिस्टन्सिंग पाळणं शक्यच नाही.

"आम्हाला खरा धोका दूषित पाण्याचा आहे," सुरेखा सांगते. "त्याच्यामुळे कधी आम्हाला सर्दी, खोकला, ताप, पोटाच दुखणं असे त्रास होतात. आता कोरोनाची लक्षणं पण हीच आहेत. लक्षण दिसली की लगेच अँब्युलन्समध्ये टाकून हॉस्पिटलला घेऊन जातात. पण आम्हाला त्रास वेगळ्याच गोष्टींनी होतोय."

नॅशनल सँपल सर्व्हे 2018 नुसार भारतात 40 टक्के घरांमध्ये पिण्याच्या पाण्याची सोय नाहीये. भारतातल्या गावांमध्ये 40 टक्क्यांहून जास्त लोक, यातल्या बहुतांश महिलाच असतात, पाणी आणण्यासाठी रोज दीड किलोमीटरपर्यंत पायपीट करतात.

शेजारच्याच घरात गंगुबाई पारधी नागलीच्या भाकऱ्या थापत बसल्या आहेत. सत्तरीच्या वय असावं त्यांचं.

भाकरी थापता थापता जरा जोर देऊन म्हणतात, "काय सांगावं बाई, एकीकडे पाण्याचं टेन्शन, दुसरीकडे रोगाने माणसं मरतात त्याचं टेन्शन. (त्यांचा रोख कोरोनाकडे असतो.) आज या गावी माणसं मेल्याचं कळतं, उद्या त्या गावी, काय करावं समजत नाही."

त्यांच्या घरात एकून 18 माणसं आहेत. घरातल्या बायकांचा सगळा वेळ इतक्या माणसांना प्यायला, वापरायला पुरेल इतकं पाणी आणण्यातच जातो.

"माझ्या लग्नाला पन्नास-साठ वर्षं झाली, पण पाणी काही आम्हाला मिळत नाही," त्या तव्यावरून पाणी फिरवताना सांगतात.

प्रश्न फक्त पिण्याच्या पाण्याचा नाहीये, भारतात 35 टक्के घरांमध्ये स्वच्छतागृहांचा वापर केला जात नाही, कारण त्यासाठी पाणी नसतं.

60 टक्के लोक फक्त पाण्याने हात धुतात कारण त्यांना साबण किंवा तत्सम गोष्टी उपलब्ध नसतात.

प्राथमिक आरोग्य सुविधांचा अभाव, पाण्याची टंचाई, स्वच्छतागृहांमध्ये पाणी नसणं, साबण नसणं अशा समस्या वर्षानुवर्ष भारताच्या ग्रामीण भागात आहेतच.

कोरोनामुळे हे मुद्दे पुन्हा प्रकाशझोतात आलेत. इथल्या गावकऱ्यांचं म्हणणं ऐकलं तर कळतं की त्यांना खरी भीती या समस्यांची आहे.

"कोरोनाची भीती आहेच, पण त्याआधी तहानेने मरू," वीस वर्षांची सुरेखा, जिने जन्मापासून फक्त पाणीटंचाईच पाहिली आहे, असं म्हणते तेव्हा या समस्या किती गंभीर आहेत ते लक्षात येतं.

"माझी एकच विनंती आहे सरकारला की काहीही करा पण आम्हाला पाणी द्या," ती म्हणते. "एकतर पाणी द्या नाहीतर आमच्या विहिरीत विषाणू टाकून द्या. ते पाणी आम्ही पितो, म्हणजे हा रोजरोजचा त्रास संपेल."

जीव तर असाही जाणार आहे आणि तसाही, पण कोरोना परवडला तहान नको असं जर आपल्याच देशातले लोक म्हणत असतील तर मग भयानक समस्या कोणती?
